01 Opening
Bluster beat 1 of 5

Bluster is a young deer who has never once looked small. He has two small antlers, a blue scarf and a green sweater-vest, and he walks with his chin up and his chest out. When he steps into a room, other animals shuffle aside to make space, often before they have even thought about it.

In the twenty-piece game that evening, Bluster was playing a 5 for Red. Not weak, not strong. A 5 beats the four runners, the three badgers and the two 4s, and loses to the 6, 7, 8, 9 and Ursa. Right in the middle.

"What if I walk like a 9?" Bluster asked.

"Explain," said Fairwell, the calm wild boar who keeps the games fair.

"Think about how strong pieces move," Bluster said. "They march forward. They go straight at things. They don't back away. Nobody can see my number, only how I move. So if I move the way a strong piece moves, Blue has to decide whether to believe it. If they believe it, they'll get out of my way."

So Bluster marched. Turn after turn, he stepped straight toward Blue's pieces and never once backed off. And it worked. Blue's 4 stepped aside rather than risk it. Blue's 3 retreated a square. A whole side of the board opened up, and while every Blue eye was on Bluster, Red's real 9 slipped through the gap behind him.

Bluster felt brilliant. His chest puffed out even further.

Then Blue tested him.

They sent their 7 straight at him. The two pieces met and turned over. A 7 beats a 5, and Bluster went home.

He sat on the side of the board feeling a little foolish. Being found out stings, even in a game where everybody knows bluffing is allowed.

Pricetag the hedgehog sat down beside him. "Before you decide how that went, look at the board," he said. "You held Blue back for six turns. Our 9 got through because of you. And Blue had to risk their 7 to find out what you were. Now their 7 is out on the left, nowhere near where it needs to be."

05 Closing
Bluster beat 5 of 5

Bluster looked again, properly this time. It was true. The bluff had been caught, and it had still been worth it. He had not been trying to fool Blue forever. Nobody can do that, because sooner or later somebody tests every bold piece. What a bluff really buys is time, and he had spent that time well.

"Next time," Bluster said slowly, "I'll expect to be tested. So I'll bluff in the place where those turns matter most, like when our 9 needs a path, or when our Moonstone needs one more move of cover."

Fairwell nodded. "And remember why it's fair. Both players agreed that pieces hide their numbers and can move however the rules allow. Pretending inside the game is part of the puzzle. Pretending about something real, outside the game, would be a different thing entirely."

That is Bluster's rule. In this game, a bold piece looks strong, and that changes what the other side does. A bluff lasts only until someone tests it, so treat it as a way to buy turns, not as a disguise that never comes off. Spend it where the turns you buy are worth the most.
