Relay
passing a song between singers
Relay Passes the Song Along
Relay was a lively little bird who carried a small microphone, and Relay’s favorite thing in the world was sharing a song — passing it from one singer to the next, so a whole family could sing the same tune together.
Here was Relay’s clever gift. When you finished your verse and passed the mic to someone new — a big sister, a grandpa, a friend — Relay didn’t just hand over the song as-is. Relay re-keyed it, sliding the whole tune gently up or down until it landed in the next singer’s comfy range. Same song, same shape — now it fit them, too.
This is the thing no ordinary sing-along can do: it lets a little voice and a big voice sing the very same song, each in a key that fits. Nobody has to strain to match someone else. The song simply travels around the room, changing its key like a hat passed from head to head, always fitting whoever’s wearing it.
So a whole family could pass the mic around the circle — everyone singing the same beloved tune, each in their own comfy key, no one left out or stretched too far. Relay zipped happily between them. A song is meant to be shared. Pass the mic, and Relay makes it fit every voice it lands in.
Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up
For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.
Let them finish it
Say “Pass the mic to Relay — the same song …” and stop. Let them finish it.
Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.
