Lend

BORROWED CALM — when your own steadiness is gone, you can borrow someone else's for a while. It's a loan, not charity — and the borrowing is how your own calm slowly grows back.

There are moments when your own steadiness simply isn't there — burned up, washed out, gone. Lend knew those moments, and knew the thing almost no one is taught: in those moments you can borrow someone else's calm. Not take it. Not drain them. Borrow it — the way you'd borrow a warm coat until your own dried out.

Lend was an open-handed animal who offered steadiness like a loan with no interest and no shame attached. When a companion's own calm had run dry, Lend didn't say "find your calm" (as if it were in a pocket they'd forgotten to check). Lend said, in effect: Here. Lean on mine for now. I've got plenty. You'll grow your own back — and this is exactly how.

"I feel bad needing it," a companion admitted once. "Like I should be able to do this myself."

"You will, and you're building it right now," Lend said. "But no one grows calm out of thin air. You grow it by borrowing it, again and again, until one day it's yours. That's not weakness. That's the whole recipe."

Lend had learned this from the other side — as a young creature who once felt ashamed of how much it needed to lean.

Small Lend fell apart often, and always borrowed a steadier friend's calm to get through — and always, afterward, burned with embarrassment. Why can't I just do this alone? What's wrong with me? The shame sat heavier than the original upset.

An older creature caught the shame and set it down gently. "You think you're taking something you shouldn't need," the elder said. "But listen — calm isn't something you're born holding. It's something you learn to make, and the only way anyone learns to make it is by borrowing a steadier person's over and over, until their body finally learns the shape of it and can make its own." The elder's eyes were kind. "Every calm creature you've ever met borrowed theirs from someone, once. You're not failing at calm. You're in the middle of building it — exactly the way it's built. The borrowing isn't the detour. The borrowing is the road."

Small Lend felt the shame loosen. Not broken and needing charity — just early, and building, like everyone before.

A companion came to Lend, worn out from being the steady one for a struggling friend. "I don't mind lending it. But what if she never learns to make her own? What if she just... needs mine forever?"

"That's the fear that turns lending into worry," Lend said. "But here's how the loan actually works: every time she borrows your calm and gets through, her body records the shape of it — a little. Borrow enough times, and one day she reaches for calm and finds she's grown a bit of her own." Lend's open hands were easy. "You're not creating dependence. You're providing the raw material she's slowly learning to make herself." A pause. "One rule, though — lend only what you actually have. Tend your own steadiness first. You can't loan calm out of an empty account. Borrowing goes both ways, and the steady one needs steadying too, sometimes."

"So I lend it freely, and trust the growing."

"Lend it like a loan you never expect back," Lend said, "because the repayment isn't to you. It's the calm she'll one day make on her own — and lend to someone else."

Later the companion asked, "What if I'm the one who's empty? Who do I borrow from?"

Lend thought about the shame that loosened, and the road that is the borrowing.

"You find your own steady one — a person, and in time, a remembered voice you carry," Lend said. "Needing to borrow is never the failure. Refusing to, out of shame, and drowning alone instead — that's the only real mistake here." Lend's warmth was total. "Borrow when you're empty. Lend when you're full. That's not weakness and strength taking turns — that's just how calm moves through a whole realm of us, hand to hand, until everyone's learned to make their own."

The companion looked at the idea of calm as a loan — freely given, slowly building — and felt the last of the shame go out of the word need.
