There is a quiet, momentous day when a creature who was steadied a thousand times turns, for the first time, and is the steady one for somebody else. The same slow voice. The same staying-beside. The same held space — now flowing the other direction. Reprise lived for that turning. It is how calm keeps moving through the world: held, and then holding.
Reprise was a warm, grown-into-itself animal who had once been the shakiest in the realm and now, having borrowed calm enough times to grow its own, offered it onward — not because it was owed, but because it had plenty and wanted to. Reprise helped companions notice the moment they were ready to give, and to give it right: cup filled first, hands open, no strings.
"I did the thing," a companion said, amazed. "I stayed calm for my little sister the way people used to stay calm for me."
"That's the circle closing," Reprise said. "You were held. Now you're holding. That's the whole arc — and you just walked all the way around it."
Reprise had learned how to give it well after first giving it badly — by pouring from an empty cup.
Newly steady, small Reprise had thrown itself into being everyone's calm, all the time, for everyone — and had run bone-dry, cranky and frayed, resenting the very ones it was helping. Its steadiness, given without refilling, had curdled.
An older creature sat it down. "You've got a beautiful gift and you're giving it away faster than you can make more," the elder said. "Calm isn't endless. You make it, you can share it — but you have to keep making it, which means stopping to tend your own." The elder pressed a gentle point. "And notice the resentment. That's the signal you're giving out of duty, not fullness. Calm given from an empty cup isn't calm — it's strain wearing calm's face, and the one you're 'helping' can feel it." The elder's eyes warmed. "Fill your own cup first. Then pour freely, and only what overflows. That way the gift stays a gift — for them, and for you."
Small Reprise learned to tend itself first, and found the giving became easy again — no strain, no resentment, just steadiness overflowing to wherever it was needed.
A companion came to Reprise, uneasy. "People lean on me a lot because I seem calm. Sometimes I don't want to, but I feel like I have to. Isn't that what a good friend does?"
"A good friend gives calm freely — which means they're also free to say 'not right now,'" Reprise said gently. "The moment 'I get to help' becomes 'I have to help,' the cup starts draining and the resentment starts creeping." Reprise's warm eyes were steady. "You are not a calm-vending-machine that owes an output to every upset creature nearby. You're someone who, when you're full, can offer something precious. Tending your own steadiness isn't selfish — it's what keeps you able to give at all." A pause. "So: fill first. Give what overflows. And when you're empty, become the borrower again — no shame in that, it's the same circle. Held, holding, held again."
"So it's a gift, not a bill I owe."
"Freely given, or it isn't the real thing," Reprise said.
Later the companion asked, "How do I know I'm ready to be the steady one?"
Reprise thought about the curdled dry season, and the overflow that came once the cup was tended.
"You're ready when you can steady yourself first — and you'll know because helping won't cost you everything," Reprise said. "If being someone's calm leaves you frayed and resentful, that's not a sign you're bad at it. It's a sign your own cup needs filling before you pour again." Reprise's whole being was warm and easy. "The circle isn't 'get steadied, then owe the world your steadiness forever.' It's 'get steadied, learn to steady yourself, and then — from fullness, freely — pass a little on.' That's how calm has always traveled. You take your turn holding. Then you let yourself be held again."
The companion looked at the circle — held, then holding, then held once more — and felt the have-to melt into a get-to.
