Sway stood at the center of the observatory floor the way you stand when you're about to dance with someone — one foot a little in front, knees soft, weight shifted just enough that she could lean either way in an instant. She was a crane-tween, tall for her age, feathers the color of storm clouds and fresh snow, and this was the posture the students knew her by: poised, balanced, ready to answer a pull from any direction.

"Push me," she told a boy named Cobb, holding out both wingtips. "Go on. One hand."

He pressed against one wingtip, and Sway leaned into it, and — because she leaned — he felt himself pulled forward the same amount, until they were both tilted toward each other, neither one winning, both held in the lean. She grinned. "Feel that? You pushed me, but you moved too. There's no pushing something without it pushing back. That's not a dance trick. That's the oldest law in the sky."

She let Cobb straighten and pulled the folded diagram from the pocket sewn into her wing — a hand-drawn chart of loops and ellipses, one dot circling another. "Everything up there is doing exactly what we just did. The Sun doesn't just haul the Earth around. The Earth hauls back on the Sun, every bit as hard — we just don't notice, because the Sun's so much heavier it barely budges." She tapped the small dot swinging around the large one. "Two partners, always leaning toward each other, forever. Gravity isn't a rope pulling things down. It's a lean that goes both ways at once."

Sway grew up in a village whose great event was the harvest festival, and her family were its dance-callers — the cranes who taught and led the long partner-dances that closed each year.

She learned to call before she learned to read a star chart. And what she learned, standing at the head of a hall full of turning couples, was that the whole thing lived or died on a single balance. A dancer who gripped too hard yanked their partner off their feet and the figure collapsed. A dancer who wouldn't commit any pull at all left their partner grasping at air, and that collapsed too. The dance only flowed when each one leaned toward the other by just the right amount, so that two pulls became one shared, wheeling motion neither could have made alone.

Her grandmother, the eldest caller, put it to her the night before Sway's first festival. "You'll want to lead," she said. "Don't. There's no leading in a good turn — only two who pull together." Sway was six that year, and she planted her feet in the soft-kneed, ready stance and felt, for the first time, both her partner's weight and her own answering to it in the same instant. By the end of the night she couldn't tell where her pull ended and her partner's began. It had become one thing.

Years later, when someone first drew her a picture of the Moon going around the Earth, she looked at it and laughed out loud — not because it was strange, but because it was familiar. It was the harvest turn. It was the shared lean, gone enormous and silent and endless. She had been learning gravity her whole life and calling it a dance.

03 Sway

When she was twenty-two crane-years old, Sway walked to the CosmosForge academy and asked to teach. Nova, the founder, folded her arms. "Half the students arrive thinking gravity is a string that drops apples. Un-teach that for me — right now, standing here."

Sway didn't lecture. She took Nova gently by one hand and stepped into a slow half-turn, the way she'd start a festival dance, keeping the two of them leaning toward a shared point between them. "Which of us is the center?" she asked as they wheeled.

"Neither," Nova said, following despite herself. "We're both going around a spot in the middle."

"That's the Earth and the Moon," Sway said, still turning them. "That's the Sun and the Earth. Nobody's on a string. Nobody's the fixed point. We're both falling toward the middle and both moving sideways enough to keep missing it — so we circle, and circle, and never crash and never fly apart." She stopped, still holding the balanced lean. "The whole cosmos is doing this. I'd rather show it than say it."

Nova looked down at their two hands, each pulling the other by exactly as much, and let go with something like delight. "Then dance it into them," she said. "Every last one."

Sway's workshop always had cleared floor space, because she taught gravity on her feet. She'd take the paired-step posture, unfold her orbit-diagram on the bench, and start with a hand held out to a partner.

"Newton gave us the arithmetic of the lean," she told Cobb, pressing their palms together and easing the pressure as she stepped back. "The force is G times the two masses, divided by the distance between them squared — F = G·m₁·m₂/r². Bigger partners, harder pull. And here's the part your feet already know —" she doubled the gap between them, then quadrupled it "— reach twice as far apart and the pull doesn't just halve, it drops to a quarter. Distance weakens it fast."

She spun a marble on a string over the bench, letting it circle her fist. "This is an orbit, and it's the strangest true thing I teach: the marble is falling toward my hand the whole time. But it's also moving sideways fast enough that it keeps missing. Falling and missing, falling and missing — that's all an orbit is. The Moon is falling at the Earth this very second and will keep missing it for billions of years."

She unrolled the diagram to a stretched loop. "And they aren't tidy circles. Kepler caught that — the paths are ellipses, squashed loops with the big partner off to one side. The orbiting body swings faster when it's close and dozes when it's far, sweeping equal patches of space in equal time. And how long a full trip takes ties straight to how far out it rides." She traced the near edge of the loop, where it bent tightest. "The Moon leans harder on Earth's near side than its far side, and that lopsided lean is what heaves the oceans up into tides — but Tide can tell you that story better than I can."

Wren, at the back, asked, "Is it the same pull holding whole galaxies together?"

"Exactly the same, and this is the wonder of it." Sway barely touched Cobb's wingtip. "Feel that? The pull between you and the person beside you is real, and it's almost nothing — gravity is gentle up close and small." She swept her wing toward the dome. "But let it work on mountains of stars across unthinkable distance and that same faint lean gathers gas into suns, suns into galaxies, galaxies into clusters. Newton's arithmetic covers nearly all of it. Where things get truly extreme — a black hole's edge, or Mercury's slow wobble — Einstein showed the pull is really space itself bending, and both pictures are right at their own scales. One law, gentle in a room and titanic across the sky."

05 Closing

At the end, Cobb lingered by the swinging marble. "It just seems like a lot," he said. "One rule doing all of that."

Sway offered him her hand and took the ready stance, feet apart, knees soft. "Push me again," she said, and when he did, she leaned back exactly as much, so they hung there together, balanced, neither falling. "It's not a lot of rules. It's one — everything pulls toward everything, and if you're moving sideways enough, you fall forever without landing." She smiled at the shared lean between their hands. "The Moon and the Earth are holding each other up just like this. Quiet. Steady. Both pulling at once, neither one in charge."

He grinned and eased off, and they both came upright, and Sway felt the warm gladness she always felt at the end of a lesson — the deep contentment of a turn well-called, of two pulls become one motion. Her paired-step posture settled easy under her. Somewhere overhead the Moon was falling and missing, falling and missing, keeping its long faithful lean toward the Earth, and she liked knowing she wasn't watching from outside it. She was in the dance too. Everything was.
