Phrase Fox and the Words That Travel in Groups
Trotting along the reeds of Story Pond comes Phrase Fox, a bright orange fox with a swishy tail and light, dancing feet. Foxes move in smooth little leaps, and that is exactly how Phrase Fox reads — not in stiff, single steps, but in flowing little hops of words that belong together.
A young reader was reading in a slow, flat, robot voice: “The… big… dog… ran… fast.” Each word stood all alone, and the sentence didn’t sound like anything. Phrase Fox padded over. “You’re reading them one at a time,” he said kindly, “like beads that fell off a string. But words like to travel in little groups.”
He showed her. “See how the big dog go together? That’s one group. And ran fast is another.” He scooped the words up in gentle hops: “The big dog … ran fast.” Suddenly the sentence moved — it sounded like a real thing a real person would say. He never made her feel slow for reading word-by-word; he just showed her where the groups were.
Say it with Phrase Fox, out loud: “Read in groups, not one-by-one — little phrases make it fun.”
She tried the next line, scooping words into little groups, hopping smoothly from one to the next. Her reading stopped sounding like a robot and started sounding like a story. “It flows now!” she laughed. Phrase Fox flicked his tail, pleased she’d felt the difference herself.
That is Phrase Fox’s move. Don’t read every word alone like beads off a string. Look for the little groups of words that belong together, and read them in smooth hops — the big dog… ran fast. When words travel in groups, the sentence flows, and the story finally sounds like a story.
Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up
For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.
Let them finish it
Say “Read in groups, not one-by-one — little …” and stop. Let them finish it.
Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.
