Breeze and the Warm, Soft Air

Breeze was a gentle little cloud who drifted around the recorder players, and Breeze knew the secret to a sweet note: the air. Not a big hard puff — a soft, warm breath, like the air you use to fog up a cold window.

When someone blew too hard and fast, the recorder would squeak — eeek! — and everyone giggled, including Breeze. A squeak isn’t a mistake to feel bad about; it’s just air that arrived in too much of a hurry. Breeze would swirl in close and whisper, “Softer. Warmer. Slower.” And the next breath came out gentle.

With Breeze’s warm, steady air, the recorder stopped squeaking and started singing — a clear, round note that stayed put. It’s the same soft air you’d use to blow a bubble without popping it, or to cool a spoonful of soup. Gentle breath in, sweet note out.

Soon the little player could feel it: the calm, warm breath that made a clear note, and the fast puff that made a squeak — and they could choose the gentle one. Breeze drifted a happy loop. Good playing starts with good air. Blow soft and warm, and the squeaks fly away.

Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up

For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.

Let them finish it

Say “Blow soft and warm like Breeze — a gentle wind makes …” and stop. Let them finish it.

Then say the whole line together: “Blow soft and warm like Breeze — a gentle wind makes a sweet note, never a squeak!”.

Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.
