Mayor Tila the Tortoise

Tila is a calm, kind tortoise, and she is the mayor of a friendly little town. Her town is one big square block, laid out neat on the grass. And Tila loves her town, because the big block is really made of lots of little square lots, all snug side by side, like tiles.

Tila wears a small soft sash, because she is the mayor. But she does not boss anyone. She just walks slowly around her square block and smiles, because she knows one steady, gentle thing: “A whole block is all its lots put together.”

One morning a young rabbit runs up. “Mayor Tila! How BIG is the whole block? It looks like SO much!”

Tila does not hurry. She never does. She points a slow paw. “Let’s not stare at the whole big thing all at once,” she says warmly. “Let’s look at the lots.” And there they are - little square lots, in tidy rows and columns, like a grid of gardens. A lot here. A lot beside it. A whole row of lots. Then another row, just the same.

Tila counts the lots, calm and even. And when she has counted every little lot, she has counted the whole block - all at once. Nothing missing. Nothing left over. The little parts add back up to the big whole.

That is Mayor Tila’s whole steady idea.

A whole block is all its lots put together.

If one lot were empty, the block would not be finished. Tila would just point, kind and slow, and say, “One more lot, right there.” She never frowns at an empty lot. She only helps it get filled. And when the last lot is snug, the little squares become one whole block, and the town is complete.

A grown-up can play too! You can build a whole out of its parts. Line up some square tiles, or crackers, or sticky notes, into tidy rows and columns - a little square town block on the table. Point to each little lot, row by row: “lot… lot… lot.” Then sweep your hand over the WHOLE big square: “and all together, they make one block!” Count the little lots - and you have counted the big block too. If a lot is missing, don’t fret - find one more, and lay it in.

That is the whole made of its lots. Lots of little squares, snug together, become one big block. Count the little ones, and you have counted the big one too.

When the last lot slides into place and the little squares become one whole town block, Mayor Tila feels a warm, quiet gladness - the calm, cozy feeling of something finished and whole. She tucks her head, proud and slow. “Whole,” she says softly. “Every lot home. Now the town is one.”

And the little town lies neat in the sun, part beside part, all one square block, exactly as a mayor likes it.
