Pier unfolded the old data-table across the desk, smoothing its soft creases flat, and raised the magnifying glass on its brass chain to read a line of tiny inked figures. She was a badger-tween, small for her age, banded grey and cream and black, patient as a slow river. She read the number under the glass — and then she did the thing that made her Pier. She stopped reading the number, and started asking who it was about.
"'Between 1845 and 1855, the population here dropped by about twenty-five percent,'" she read aloud, softly, to the empty workshop. Then she set the glass down and pressed a paw flat on the empty space beside the column, as if she could feel the missing weight of it. "Twenty-five percent. That's a true number. And it says nothing at all about the families in it — who left, who stayed, who never came back."
Her friend Splice found the bones inside a poem. Pier looked for the people inside a table. She traced the column with one claw. Half a story lived in the figures; the other half lived in the lives the figures were quietly standing in for, and her whole craft was refusing to read one half without the other. She folded the data-table and slid it into her vest. The next dataset would get the same two questions: what does it count — and who does it forget?
She learned to distrust a lonely number young, at her grandmother's elbow.
Pier's family were the village census-keepers — the badgers who kept the yearly rolls of who lived where and did what work. When Pier was six she found a line in the ledger that said three new families and read it out proudly, all done.
Her grandmother did not say well read. She said, "Who are they?"
Pier looked again. The line didn't say. "It just says three."
"Then you've read half of it." Her grandmother took the ledger and turned to a shelf of worn diaries and folded letters the family kept beside the numbers. "Three families came over the ridge that winter. This one," she tapped a letter, "was fleeing a flooded valley. This one came for the mill work. This one — nobody knows, they never said, and that silence is part of the record too." She closed the ledger gently. "The count is where you start asking. It is never where you stop. A number that replaces its people isn't a fact anymore. It's a fog."
Pier spent that whole winter matching ledger-lines to letters, learning that a tidy figure could hide a whole crowd — and that some of the crowd wasn't in the ledger at all. The old rolls had counted only the heads of households, mostly men. The women, the children, the servants, the newcomers still unregistered — all there in the valley, none there in the number. By the time she was grown, Pier could not read a total without hearing the silence around its edges: who's counted, and who isn't.
She walked to the BridgeForge academy the summer she turned twenty-two, and Archie handed her a single index card with one line printed on it: pop. −25%, one decade.
"Tell me what this is worth," the academy's founder said.
Pier read it, then looked up. "On its own? Almost nothing. It's true and it's empty." She turned the card over, found it blank, and tapped the emptiness. "It doesn't tell me if twenty-five percent left because a harvest failed or because a mill opened two towns over and paid better. It doesn't tell me if the count even saw everyone — day-workers, babies, people passing through." She handed it back. "Give me the diaries and letters from those ten years and I'll tell you what the number means. Give me only the number and I'll tell you to be careful, because a true figure can lie by leaving people out."
Archie turned the little card over in his paws, looking at how she'd refused to be impressed by an accurate statistic — how she'd reached past the figure for the missing faces instead of trusting the digit. He hadn't wanted a calculation. He'd wanted to see whether she'd hold the people while she held the math. She had. A workshop was hers by evening.
Her first lesson always began with the data-table unfolded and the magnifying glass raised.
"Read me the headline," she told the badger-kits, sliding the table toward them. A kit read off the top figure — a population total for one year. "Good. That's the surface. Now the real question." She leaned in. "Who are these numbers about? Not 'people.' Which people?"
The kits floundered, then guessed — families, farmers, a whole town. "Closer," Pier said. "A group who share something — same town, same trade, same year of birth. Now the harder one." She turned the table so the empty right margin showed. "Look at what's not here. This old roll listed only the head of each house. So it counted the fathers. Where are the mothers? The children? The hired hands?" A small kit said, quietly, they were there, they're just not in it, and Pier nodded slowly. "That's the whole job. Someone was always in the valley and left out of the count."
Then she brought out a worn diary and laid it beside the table. "The people in the data left other tracks. Letters. Diaries. Stories grandparents tell." She read one line from the diary — a girl describing the winter her family crossed the ridge — and set it next to the −25% figure. "Now put them together. The number gives the shape: how many, how fast. The diary gives the meaning: this girl, cold, scared, hopeful." She let that sit. "Watch the tricks, too. A percentage that drops can hide a raw count that grew. An average can hide how spread-out things really were. A big category can hide the differences inside it." She looked around the bench. "A true number and a misleading number can be the exact same number. It depends whether you kept the people."
A kit who'd said barely a word until now put her claw on the diary line, then on the figure, and moved it back and forth between them like she was weighing something. "So neither one's the real thing by itself."
"Neither one," Pier agreed. "Statistics without stories, I've learned to distrust. Stories without statistics, the same. The truth is the joint between them."
"Is it hard?" a kit asked, refolding the corner of the table like she'd seen Pier do.
"You just did it," Pier said. "You read the number, then you asked who it forgot. That's the whole thing. Data plus people — half the story each." She folded the table with practiced ease and tucked it away.
The kit looked back down at the figures, and her face changed — the grid of numbers going soft, becoming families now, becoming the cold girl from the diary crossing a winter ridge. Her expression turned sad and kind all at once, the way it does when a stranger stops being a statistic and starts being a person you're standing next to.
That was the moment Pier carried the folded paper in her pocket for. Not the count. The instant a kid stopped seeing figures and started seeing the people inside them — the quiet gladness of watching someone get remembered. It made her feel warm and steady, right down through her chest. The next dataset waited, ready to be read with the people held in mind.
