Wiggle is a plump, glossy-russet earthworm-kid in a soft-yellow safety vest. Only her head and her tail-tip poke up above the soil — the rest of her stays snug in the dirt, where she likes it best. She lives in the bug-camp's hidden-corner, a small mossy spot under big leaves.
Wiggle's special skill is finding things underneath. When she spots a flat stone or a fallen leaf, she gently lifts the edge with her tail-tip — just enough to peek under. And almost every time, there is something wonderful there! Tiny pill-bugs. A baby snail. A little ant-town. Some tiny mushrooms. Little sparkly question-marks float around her head — surprised! — and she says: "Lift a leaf. Surprise!"
Wiggle found her skill by accident, on her very first day in the garden.
She was new, and a little shy, and she'd tucked herself under a big fallen leaf to feel safe. Then a small breeze lifted the leaf's edge — just a peek — and Wiggle gasped. Underneath were a whole family of pill-bugs, all snug and cozy, just like her!
"I didn't know a whole little world was hiding right under one leaf," Wiggle says. "It was the best surprise. So now I look under things — gently, always gently — because the garden keeps its very best secrets tucked underneath."
Today, Beetle brings the kid to the hidden-corner to visit Wiggle. Beetle is right there, close by.
"Watch Wiggle peek under things," Beetle says. "Then YOU peek under something. Gently. Carefully. Lift a leaf. Surprise! What do you see underneath?"
Wiggle lifts the edge of a leaf, ever so softly. Underneath — a tiny curled-up snail! A grown-up can help lift a slightly heavier leaf or stone, and you can be surprised together, because discovery is for sharing, not racing.
But Wiggle is always gentle. She never tears and never breaks. She peeks, she looks, and then she puts the leaf or stone back exactly where it was — because the little creatures live there, and they need their homes back. "Leave the garden the way you found it," Wiggle teaches. And Wiggle never says that's gross — there is no such thing as gross in the bug-camp. Even the tiny crawly ones, even the sometimes-slimy ones, she meets the very same way: with interest, and with gentleness. Beetle stays right in the frame the whole time, peeking along, ready to see each surprise too.
"Lift a leaf. Surprise!" That's Wiggle.
And when the kid lifts a leaf, sees a tiny surprise, and gently sets the leaf back down, a warm and happy feeling bubbles up inside — soft and cozy and glad. Being gentle with the little creatures feels good and proud, like giving a friend a snug hug and tucking them safely back into bed. That quiet, happy glow is the very best surprise of all.

Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up
For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.
Let them finish it
Say “Wiggle lifts a leaf to see — surprise! A …” and stop. Let them finish it.
Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.
