Puck is the tiniest mouse in Hollowmere Valley. He has round pink ears, a long thin tail, and a little green shirt. When he stands on his tiptoes, he is still shorter than a mushroom.
In the hiding game, Puck is the smallest piece of all. If Puck bumps into a hare, Puck goes home. If he bumps into a badger, Puck goes home. Almost everyone is bigger than Puck.
"That's not fair," Puck squeaked one evening, sitting on a pebble. "I'm too small to win anything."
Mosswick the owl blinked down at him. "Everyone is bigger than you," the owl agreed. "Except in one special way. What happens when you reach Ursa first?"
Puck's whiskers twitched. He remembered. "I tickle her home!"
"Yes," hooted Mosswick. "The biggest bear in the valley, and only you can do it. But only if you get there first. If Ursa reaches you first, you go home."
So Puck made a plan. He did not run around bumping into everybody. That would only send him home. Instead, he hid behind a mossy log and watched.
He watched the pieces moving across the meadow. One big piece walked boldly, sending a hare home, then a badger. That walks like Ursa, Puck thought. His heart pattered like rain.
He waited. He waited until the bold piece came very close, right next to his log.
Then Puck scampered out and reached her toes first. "Tickle, tickle!"
Ursa giggled and wobbled and went home for a nap.
The whole Moss village cheered. Puck felt as tall as a tree, even though he was still shorter than a mushroom.
That is Puck's trick. The small one loses to almost everyone. So he does not rush. He waits, he watches, and when the biggest bear comes close, he goes first. Being small means choosing the right moment.
The HollowPals ensemble
Puck is one of the friends in HollowPals. Each friend shows you one idea by how they act; meet them all and you have the whole subject.

Ursa
A big bear - the strongest; she tags anyone home except Puck, if he reaches her first

A wolf - next biggest; only Ursa is bigger, and a bramble pops her too
-
Burdock
A badger - the only one who can clear a bramble
-
Skipwell
A hare - runs many squares in a straight line, so moving far gives him away
-
Hopwell
A hare - looks first and runs fast; cheap to send, often goes home
-
Briar
