The workbench well had run dry again, and the whole academy was thirsty. Alumi didn't announce anything. She simply unclipped the small, dented aluminum cup from her belt, walked to the rain-barrel out back, dipped it, and carried water — trip after quiet trip — to every student who needed it. The cup was light enough that she barely felt it full. When a passing student marveled that it hadn't rusted through after all these years, Alumi turned it over in her steady paws.

"It can't rust," she said. A short beaver, warm russet-and-cream, she spoke the way she moved: without fuss. "The moment air touches me, a thin skin of aluminum oxide grows over my surface — a layer only a few atoms thick, but tough. It seals me shut against the water. Iron wishes it could do that." She tapped the gleaming inside of the cup. "So I just keep working."

The student asked why she carried aluminum instead of something grander. Alumi tipped her head, thinking. Every atom in the cup had once held three loose electrons on its outer shell — three too many to sit still. Each atom had given all three away, three at a time, becoming Al³⁺, a triply-positive ion that finally sat balanced. That giving is what let the metal exist at all. It wasn't dramatic. It was just useful, over and over, the way she liked things to be.

She refilled the cup and carried it back inside. Nobody made a fuss, and that suited her fine.

Alumi grew up in a village of tool-makers — beavers who hand-shaped every knife, pot, hinge, and latch the place ran on. Nothing they made was decorated. Everything they made lasted.

When Alumi was small, she watched her grandmother repair a garden hoe that had broken three separate times over forty years. Each time, her grandmother didn't grumble about wasted work. She reheated the metal, reshaped it, and set it back in the shed. "A tool that comes back," her grandmother said, "costs almost nothing the second time. It's already made. You just wake it up again."

That idea lodged in Alumi and never left. Years later she'd learn the chemistry that matched it exactly. Pulling fresh aluminum out of the ground was brutally expensive — bauxite ore dissolved in molten cryolite and torn apart with electricity, the Hall-Héroult process running since 1886, eating thirteen or fourteen kilowatt-hours of power for a single kilogram of metal. But melting an old can back into a new one? That took only about five percent of the energy. Ninety-five percent saved, just by not starting over.

Her grandmother's mended hoe and the world's most-recycled metal were, Alumi realized, the same lesson wearing different clothes. By six she already understood: the modest thing that comes back around is quietly worth more than the flashy thing made new.

She arrived at the ChemQuest academy at twenty-two, a satchel of hand-forged tools over one shoulder and the cup on her belt. Beaker, the head instructor, met her in a courtyard scattered with corroding iron scraps — a test he set for anyone claiming to know metals.

Alumi crouched among the rusting pieces, then drew a strip of dull aluminum from her satchel and laid it in the same puddle where the iron flaked orange. She waited. The iron kept bleeding rust into the water. Her strip only dulled, then held — its oxide skin sealing it the instant the air reached it.

"The iron gives its surface to the water and never stops," she said quietly, not looking up. "I give mine up once, form a skin, and I'm done." She handed Beaker the strip; it weighed almost nothing in his palm. "One-third the density of iron. Won't rust. And when it's finally worn out, you melt it back for a nickel's worth of power."

Beaker turned the light metal over, felt its stubborn oxide seal, and set it gently on the bench. He didn't need a speech. He'd just watched her metal do the whole argument for her.

Alumi's workshop smelled faintly of the well-water she was forever fetching. She began her first lesson by setting two plates side by side: one iron plate weeping reddish rust, one aluminum plate bright as a coin.

"Watch what oxygen does to each of us," she said, and let students press a wet cloth to both. Within minutes the iron darkened and pitted; the aluminum stayed silver. "Iron's oxide flakes off and lets the rot dig deeper. My oxide — aluminum oxide, Al₂O₃ — grows a sealed skin and stops. Same gas, opposite outcome."

She passed a soft, shiny scrap around so they could bend it in their fingers. "Pure, I'm light and a little floppy," she admitted, letting a student crease it. Then she clipped that scrap against a magnesium sliver and pressed them together into a stiff little bar. "But mix me with magnesium and I turn strong-for-my-weight. Mix me with copper and I'm stronger still, a touch heavier. Aircraft are built from bars like this." Down the bench she rolled a rougher block. "That one's headed for a bicycle frame."

A student asked whether aluminum only ever became dull gray metal. Alumi smiled and slid a cut sapphire and a ruby across the wood, both flashing under the lamp. "These are aluminum oxide too — the very same Al₂O₃ from my rusting-skin trick, only grown into perfect crystals. And my compounds clean your water and set the dyes in your shirt." She let the gems sit there, jewel-bright beside the humble scrap. "So the modest metal is the ruby, when it feels like it."

Then she gathered the scraps into a bin marked with a curling arrow. "Everything on this bench," she said, "goes back in here when it's spent. Melt it, wake it up, use it again — for a twentieth the power of making it fresh. That's the whole job."

At the end, the badger from the back row lingered. "Is aluminum chemistry hard, Alumi?"

Alumi shook her head slowly, already tidying tools into their slots. "Three electrons given away. Al³⁺, balanced at last. A skin against rust, a body light enough to fly, and a life you can live over and over." She dropped the sapphire back into its little tin. "Not hard. Just steady."

The cup clicked back onto her belt. Somewhere the well needed refilling again, and she rose to see to it. And as she went, Alumi felt that warm, settled fullness she trusted most — the calm, glad pride of someone who knows the plain, unnoticed work she does is holding a good deal of the world quietly together.
