Chlora sat at the bench with her cupped hand held open, one electron short and waiting — and Sodi couldn't get there fast enough. She bounded across the workshop, a blur of warm-grey fur, her right paw already outstretched, palm up. Above it a tiny glowing dot pulsed: the extra electron she'd carried around all day, itching to hand off.
"Here — take it," Sodi said, tipping her paw. The glowing dot rolled off into Chlora's cupped hand. And the instant it left her, Sodi felt lighter. Her fur seemed to settle; her whole body relaxed into balance. Where a heartbeat ago she'd been Na, restless with one electron too many, now she was Na⁺ — a stable positive ion, the extra weight gone, content.
Chlora, now full, drifted close, and their opposite charges pulled them together into a tiny white crystal on the bench. "That's it," Sodi said, grinning at the little grain. "Salt. NaCl. And look how good I feel now that I've handed it over." A student remarked that Sodi seemed awfully generous. Sodi shook her head, bright-eyed. "It's not just being nice. I had one electron too many, and giving it away is how I finally sit balanced. Giving is how I settle."
Sodi grew up among gift-bearers — rabbits who carried welcome-baskets house to house during the spring festival, giving and moving on, never lingering to be thanked.
When Sodi was small she got attached to one especially pretty basket and couldn't bear to hand it over. She clutched it through three whole houses, and by the fourth the flowers had wilted and the bread had gone stale, and the gift was ruined. Her mother knelt beside her. "A held gift spoils," she said gently. "The joy isn't in keeping it — it's in the letting go, and in how light you feel afterward. Give it, and give it gladly, then off to the next door."
So the next morning Sodi tried. She handed her first basket over the moment she reached the doorway — and felt a rush of unexpected happiness as the family's faces lit up. She was lighter without the weight of it, freer to bound to the next house. By the end of the route she'd given away everything and felt wonderful. By six she understood the thing that would shape her whole life: giving isn't loss. Handing off the thing you're carrying, to someone glad to have it, is how you feel balanced and free.
At twenty-two she arrived at the ChemQuest academy, where Beaker set a dish of water and a stoppered vial of glowing sodium metal on the bench. "Show me sodium," he said.
Sodi didn't recite. She unstoppered the vial — carefully, at arm's length — and let one speck of the metal touch the water. Instantly it fizzed and hissed, skating across the surface, flinging its loose electrons at the water's hydrogen atoms so fast the dish steamed and a whiff of hydrogen gas rose off it. "See how badly I want to give?" she called over the fizzing. "I'll shove my electron at the nearest taker the second I get the chance."
Then, to show the gentler side, she brought a single sodium atom up to a waiting chlorine, tipped her glowing electron into its hand, and made a clean, calm crystal of salt. "Violent when I'm pure and eager. Peaceful once I've given and settled." She nudged the salt toward Beaker. He looked from the steaming dish to the quiet crystal — the same drive, wild and then calm — and nodded her inside.
Sodi ran her workshop at a bounce. She began her first lesson by holding out her open palm, the electron-dot glowing above it, and asking a student what they thought she most wanted to do with it.
"Keep it?" the student guessed.
"Ha — the opposite! Give it." Sodi held up the glow. "I've got one electron more than a settled shell wants. One. If I hand it off, the full shell underneath becomes my new outer shell, and I'm balanced — Na⁺, stable, done." She tipped the electron to Chlora, who caught it, and the two clicked into a salt crystal. "Watch: opposite charges pull us tight, and that pull is the bond that makes table salt."
She grew serious and gestured at the water-dish from her entrance test, still faintly steaming. "But pure sodium metal is fierce. Drop it in water and it gives its electrons away so fast it makes hydrogen gas, heat, and sodium hydroxide — a real hazard. Never, ever a kitchen thing." She let that land, then brightened. "Tamed into salt, though? Harmless — the stuff on your fries."
She hopped to a diagram of the human body. "And here's the wonderful part: once I'm Na⁺ in your blood — from the salt in your food — the giving's already done, and then I get to work." She traced a nerve. "As a positive ion I help fire the signals racing along your nerves. I help balance the water inside your cells. I help set your blood pressure." She pressed both paws to a cell-membrane diagram. "Every cell runs a little pump, shoving sodium out and potassium in, pushing us where we wouldn't naturally drift. That pump burns most of the energy your cells spend — and it's the very thing that lets your nerves signal at all." She spread her paws wide. "So one simple handoff of one electron ends up powering your whole nervous system. Small gift, enormous work."
When a student asked whether sodium chemistry was hard, Sodi's bright eyes twinkled.
"Not hard. One extra electron, always given away — and everything else follows from that." She held her open palm out, ready. "Give the electron, become Na⁺, settle down, then go do the real work in someone's body."
Her palm stayed open, the next electron glowing above it, waiting for a taker. And as she felt it lift away toward a hand glad to receive it, Sodi was filled with the feeling she loved best of all — that warm, weightless lightness of handing off exactly what someone else was missing, and settling, balanced and glad, in the letting go.
