There are two villages in Hollowmere Valley, the Moss village and the Reed village. Between them lies a meadow with two still ponds. And in each village, hidden somewhere, is a glowing Moonstone.

The pieces of the other village are always turned face down. You cannot see who is who. So how do you find the Moonstone?

"We watch," said Mosswick the owl, settling on his branch. "Every piece tells you something by the way it moves."

That evening, the whole Moss village gathered by the pond to watch.

"Look!" said Skipwell. "That piece ran four squares at once. Only a hare can run that far. That's a hare!"

"Look over there," said Lupa. "That piece is marching straight at us and sending our friends home. It walks like the biggest. That might be the bear."

Puck's whiskers twitched. "If it's the bear, I'll wait behind the log for her."

"And there," said Burdock, pointing to the back corner of the Reed village. "Those two pieces haven't moved all game."

Everybody went quiet. Pieces that never move are special. A Moonstone never moves. A bramble never moves either.

"One of those is probably the Moonstone," said Mosswick. "And the other might be a bramble guarding it."

"Then I'll go first and find out," said Hopwell bravely. He hopped across and bumped the first still piece. Pop! A bramble. Hopwell went home.

"Now it's my job," said Burdock. He shuffled over and cleared the bramble with his trowel.

Ursa stepped forward to the last still piece. She bumped it gently.

It glowed. The Reed village's Moonstone!

"We found it together," said Briar, who had stayed back home, still and patient, guarding their own.

Mosswick ruffled his feathers happily. "You couldn't see a single one of their pieces," he said. "But you watched how they moved, and you worked it out."

That is the secret of the two villages. Watch who never moves, who runs far, and who marches boldly. Each one tells you something, and together you can find the Moonstone.
