Magi Draws the Magic-e Route

Magi was a twinkly purple bird who drew spelling-routes on the map. Her most sparkly route was the magic-e route — the trick of a silent e on the end of a word that quietly changes the vowel in the middle. It’s a pattern taught in classrooms, and Magi loved its little magic.

“Look at cap,” said Magi. “The a says aaa — a short, quick sound.” Then she waved her wing and added a silent e to the end. “Now watch. cap becomes cape.” The a changed! “Ay,” it said now — its long name. The magic e did that.

“Here’s the secret,” Magi whispered. “The e is silent — you never say it out loud. But it reaches back over the last letter and taps the vowel: ‘Say your name!’” So the vowel stops saying its short sound and says its long name instead. Silent, but powerful.

A grown-up nodded slowly. “So a silent e isn’t a mistake or a leftover — it’s doing a job.” “Exactly,” Magi sparkled. “kit → kite. hop → hope. tub → tube. Every time, the silent e makes the vowel say its name.” Now the pattern was a friend, not a puzzle.

Magi finished her route with a shimmer. “Magic e is silent, but it makes the vowel say its name — that’s the whole spell.” Now you and your grown-up could spot the magic e together, the same way the classroom teaches it. Silent letter, big job, one small sparkle of understanding.

Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up

For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.

Let them finish it

Say “Magic e is silent, but it makes the …” and stop. Let them finish it.

Then say the whole line together: “Magic e is silent, but it makes the vowel say its name.”.

Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.

Circles together: 0
