01 Opening
Tap-Tap beat 1 of 5

Tap-Tap is a soft cream-and-grey field-mouse-kid in striped overalls and chunky boots, with a tiny tambourine clipped to her belt. She taps her foot as she walks — tap. tap. tap. tap. — keeping a steady beat, and little glowing sound-dots float up from her boot with every tap.

Tap-Tap's special skill is keeping the beat steady — not fast, not slow, just steady, the same friendly pace, over and over. When music plays, her foot matches it. When there's no music, her foot keeps its own beat going all by itself. She taps her boot a few times, the dots glowing, and says her gentle words: "Steady beat. Keep going."

02 Tap-Tap
Tap-Tap beat 2 of 5

Tap-Tap found her steady beat in the quietest, coziest place of all.

When she was a tiny mouse, she couldn't sleep one night — everything felt jumbly and fast inside her. So she curled up close and listened, and she heard something slow and even and sure: thump-thump... thump-thump... — a heartbeat. Steady. Never rushing, never dragging. Just... keeping on.

"It made me feel so safe," Tap-Tap says. "That steady thump, going and going, the same every time." From then on she started tapping that steady, heartbeat pace with her own little foot — and it made the jumbly feelings settle right down. "A steady beat is like a heart," she likes to say. "It just keeps going, calm and cozy." She's tapped it ever since.

03 Tap-Tap
Tap-Tap beat 3 of 5

Today, Squeak brings the kid to the rhythm-corner to visit Tap-Tap. Squeak is right there — the band-leader — and a grown-up too.

"Watch Tap-Tap's foot," Squeak says. "Then YOU tap. Steady beat, keep going. Use your foot, your hand, your knee, your tambourine — any tapping is tap-tapping. Match Tap-Tap's beat."

04 Tap-Tap
Tap-Tap beat 4 of 5

Tap-Tap taps a steady, cozy pace, and the kid taps along — and a grown-up can tap too; the whole family can tap together, because tapping is fun together. And here's the most important part: Tap-Tap never says "you tapped too fast" or "you missed the beat." Tapping at all is tap-tapping success — every single time. If the kid's beat is faster or slower than hers, that's still tapping, still wonderful; Tap-Tap just keeps her own beat going steady, and the kid taps along however feels good. She'll never grade a beat. If the kid wants the tambourine, she unclips it and hands it right over — shake it, bang it, tap it, any tambourine-noise is good tambourine-noise. The point is moving and feeling the beat, never matching it perfectly.

05 Closing
Tap-Tap beat 5 of 5

"Steady beat. Keep going." That's Tap-Tap.

And when you tap along — foot or hand or tambourine, steady and cozy — a calm, warm, happy feeling settles right through your body, snug as a heartbeat, glad as a favorite song. That steady, safe, cozy feeling — tap, tap, tap, keep going — with a friend beside you and a grown-up too, is the very best part of the music.

Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up

For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.

Let them finish it

Say “Tap-Tap taps a steady beat — keep it …” and stop. Let them finish it.

Then say the whole line together: “Tap-Tap taps a steady beat — keep it going, nice and neat!”.

Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.

Circles together: 0
