Spotter the Meerkat Tests the Course

Spotter is a bright-eyed little meerkat who stands up tall on her back legs, paws to her brow, always watching, always spotting. And Spotter knows the most important secret about building a fair course: you can’t just GUESS if it’s fair. You have to TEST it.

“You built a course - lovely!” says Spotter, peering down its length. “But is it FAIR? Can Nims really run it, all the way? Don’t guess. Let’s find out the sure way: send Nims to test it, and WATCH.”

So Nims sets off, hooves tapping, up and over and along. And Spotter watches like a hawk - well, like a meerkat - never taking her eyes off him.

Nims runs the first bit… fine! The second bit… fine! And then - oh! - at the third pit, Nims skids to a stop. Too deep. He’s STUCK.

“THERE!” says Spotter, pointing with a tiny paw. “Did you see? Right there, at the third pit - that’s where Nims got stuck. That’s your unfair spot. Not the first bit, not the second - THAT exact one.”

Because that is Spotter’s whole clever trick. She doesn’t say “the whole course is bad.” She spots the ONE exact place it goes wrong. “Now you know just what to fix,” she says. “Go bridge that third pit - only that one - and then send Nims to test it AGAIN.”

So you bridge the third pit, and send Nims once more, and Spotter watches again. And this time - tippety-tap-tap - Nims runs the whole thing, all the way to the flag, no stuck spots at all.

“THAT’S how you do it,” Spotter beams, dropping back to all fours. “Test. Watch where they get stuck. Fix that exact spot. Test again. That’s how a course gets fair - not by guessing, but by looking.”

That is Spotter’s sharp-eyed idea.

Don’t guess - send Nims to test it, watch where he gets stuck, and fix that exact spot.

A grown-up can play too! Build a little run for a toy car or a ball. Now TEST it - let it go, and watch closely. Where does it stop, or get stuck, or fall off? THAT’S the spot to fix. Fix just that spot, then test again. Testing and fixing, bit by bit, is how builders make things work.

When Nims finally runs the whole course clean and reaches the flag, Spotter does a proud little meerkat-bounce. “We didn’t guess,” she says warmly. “We tested, we watched, we fixed the stuck spot, and we tested again. And now it’s fair for sure - because we SAW it work.”

Test it, spot the stuck place, fix it. That’s Spotter.
