Tila the Tortoise

Tila is a small, gentle tortoise with a shell like a little checkered quilt. Each square on her back is a patch - a soft, warm patch of colour. Tila loves her quilt-shell more than anything, because it is made of so many little patches, all snug together, making one whole Tila.

Tila has a quilt to finish. It is a big square quilt, laid out on the grass, waiting. But there is a gap in the middle - a patch is missing. And Tila has one gentle idea, and the idea is this: “A whole quilt is all its patches together.”

So Tila does not rush. She looks at the big square, and she sees it is really lots of little squares. A small square here. A long ribbon-strip there. Another ribbon just the same. And one tiny corner square. Tila smiles. “See?” she says softly. “The big square is made of the little ones.”

She lifts a patch and lays it in the gap - pat. Now the quilt has no holes. Every little square is in its place. And when Tila counts the little patches - one, two, three, four - she has counted the whole quilt, all at once. The parts add back up to the whole. Nothing is missing. Nothing is left over.

That is Tila’s whole gentle teaching.

A whole quilt is all its patches together.

If one patch is missing, the quilt is not whole yet. Tila peeks at the gap. She never frowns. She just points and says, “One more patch, right there.” When the last patch is snug, the little squares become one big square, and the quilt is done.

A grown-up can play too! You can build a whole out of parts. Take some cushions or some blocks - a big one, two long ones the same, and a tiny one - and fit them together into one big square on the floor. Point to each little piece: “square… ribbon… ribbon… corner.” Then wave your hand over the WHOLE big square: “and all together, they make one!” If a piece is missing, don’t fret - find one more, and lay it in the gap. Now it is whole.

That is the whole made of its parts. Lots of little squares, snug together, become one big square. Count the little ones, and you have counted the big one too.

When the last patch clicks into place and the little squares become one whole quilt, Tila feels a warm, glad hum inside - the happy, cozy feeling of something finally complete. She tucks her head, proud and calm. “Whole,” she says. “Every patch home. Now it is one.”

And the pond friends curl up together on Tila’s finished quilt, warm from corner to corner, part beside part, all one.
