Aud Hears It First
Aud was a big friendly ear with a dreamy swirl of music floating beside it, and Aud knew a secret that unlocks everything in music: before you play a riff, you can hear it inside your head. Silently. Clearly. Note for note. That silent inner hearing has a name — audiation — and it’s the real engine of playing by ear.
You already do it. Think of a song you love: you can “hear” it in your mind right now, with no speaker playing, no one singing. That’s audiation. Musicians use it on purpose — hearing a phrase inside first, so that when their fingers move, they’re aiming at a sound they already know, not guessing note by note in the dark.
Aud’s game was simple and powerful: play you a short riff, then ask you to hear it again inside your head before touching your instrument. Hum it in your mind. Feel where it rises and falls. Only when the sound was clear inside would you reach for the notes — and suddenly they came far more easily, because you weren’t hunting; you were matching something you could already hear.
The more you practice hearing-first, the stronger your inner ear grows, until whole melodies play clearly in your mind on demand. Audiation is playing the music in your head before your hands. Hear the riff inside, get it clear, then play. That’s Aud — the ear that listens where no sound is.
The RiffQuest ensemble
Aud is one of the friends in RiffQuest. Each friend shows you one idea by how they act; meet them all and you have the whole subject.
