Echo Listens for the Shape
Echo was a friendly sound-wave who listened to your play-back — and Echo had a wonderfully forgiving ear. When Aud gave you a riff and you played it back, Echo didn’t care whether you started on the exact same note. Echo listened for the shape: the ups, the downs, the size of the leaps. Get the shape right, and Echo counted it right — in any key.
Here’s why that’s fair, not lazy: a melody is its shape. “Happy Birthday” is the same song whether you start it low or high — what makes it that song is the pattern of steps between the notes, not the exact starting pitch. Musicians call hearing that pattern relative pitch, and it’s the ear-skill that lets you play a tune you heard on the radio in whatever key is comfy for you.
So Echo let you play your riff back starting wherever felt good for your voice or your instrument. As long as the distances between your notes matched the riff’s shape — up a little here, down a big leap there, same note held — Echo lit up green. You were free to find the key that fit you, and still be exactly right.
