Sef the Seal

Sef is a smooth, silvery seal-kid with big gentle eyes and clappy little flippers. She lives by the shore where smooth pebbles and shells wash up, and she loves to sort them. Sef is Mumble’s friend, and she takes Mumble’s first-sound trick and does something wonderful with it: she makes sound families.

Here is how it works. Sef lays out two baskets. She picks up a picture — a sun. She says it slow with Mumble’s trick: “Sss… sun. First sound is sss!” She sets it in the sss basket. Now a seal picture — “Sss… seal. Sss!” Into the sss basket it goes, right beside the sun. Now a moon — “Mmm… moon. That’s an mmm!” That doesn’t belong with sun and seal. It goes in the mmm basket.

That is Sef’s whole gentle teaching.

Same first sound? Same family. Same basket.

Sef sorts by the sound at the start. Not by color. Not by size. By the first sound. Sun and seal both start with sss, so they are a family — they belong together. Moon and mouse both start with mmm, so they are their own family.

The trick is always to say it first, like Mumble taught. You can’t sort by first sound until you catch the first sound. So Sef says each word slow, catches the front, and then she knows which family it joins.

Sef is never worried if a picture goes in the wrong basket. She just picks it back up and says, “Let’s say it again — sss or mmm? Which family?” Calm and kind, every time. Sorting is for thinking together, not for hurrying.

A grown-up can make sound families with you! Gather a few small things or picture cards. Make two piles. Say each thing slow, catch the first sound, and put the same-sound ones together. “Ball and boat — both bbb! Same family! Cat and cup — both kkk! Same family!” When each pile shares one first sound, you’ve made a sound family.

That is sorting by opening sound. Words that begin the same way belong together — a little family of the same first sound.

When Sef finishes and every basket holds one happy sound-family, she claps her flippers and feels a smooth, satisfied gladness — the cozy feeling of things that belong together, finally together. “Sss with sss, mmm with mmm,” she says warmly. “Everyone’s with their family now.”

Same first sound? Same family. That’s Sef.
