Posty the Pigeon
THE MAIL TRAVELS
Posty the Pigeon and the Letter That Traveled
On Featherpost Lane lives Posty, a plump grey homing pigeon with a smart little satchel slung across her chest and a bright badge on her cap. Pigeons have always been the world’s best letter-carriers — they know the way home no matter how far. Posty’s job is the most magical one of all: she takes a finished letter and carries it out into the real world, all the way to a real person.
A young writer once finished her very first letter and just held it, unsure. “Now what?” she asked. “Now the best part,” cooed Posty. “You fold it so it’s tidy, you tuck it in an envelope, you press on a stamp — that’s the little ticket that pays for the trip — and you drop it in the postbox. Then I do the rest.” Posty tapped her satchel proudly. “Your words go on a journey.”
The writer worried. “But how does it know where to go?” Posty smiled. “You write the person’s address on the outside, and the postbox and I carry it there — the mail is the messenger. You don’t need any screen or app for that; the real world does the carrying.” She lifted the letter gently. “And I never peek inside. A letter is private. That’s a promise every carrier keeps.”
Say it with Posty, out loud: “Fold it, stamp it, drop it in — the mail will carry what you send.”
Days later a letter came back — a reply, just for the young writer, with her own name on the front. She hugged it. Her words had traveled all that way, and words had traveled all the way back. “That’s the magic of the mail,” said Posty warmly. “You send a little of your heart, and sometimes a little heart comes home.”
That is Posty’s move. When your letter is written, don’t leave it on the table. Fold it, add a stamp, and drop it in the postbox — the real mail will carry your real words to a real person. And the best part? Sometimes a letter flies right back to you.
Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up
For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.
Let them finish it
Say “Fold it, stamp it, drop it in — the …” and stop. Let them finish it.
Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.
