Chapter 5 — Encore and the Perform-It-Yourself

It was Encore’s turn at the family talent show, and Encore’s act was the truest test in all of AweForge: not to be amazed by wonder, but to hand it to someone else.

Encore stepped up to the little table where parents, siblings, and neighbors were watching. “I have a paper cup of water and an index card. Watch.” Encore pressed the card to the rim, flipped the whole cup upside down — and let go. The card held. The water stayed. The audience GASPED.

Encore smiled. “That’s the surprise. Now here’s the science.” Encore set the cup upright and pointed at the card. “Atmospheric pressure is pushing UP on the card — about fourteen-point-seven pounds on every square inch. Gravity is pulling the water DOWN. But as long as the card seals the rim, the push-up beats the pull-down. Watch what happens if I break the seal.” Encore poked a small hole. Air rushed in from below; the card fell; the water fell. “See? No magic. Just the ocean of air that’s pressing on all of us, all the time.”

Then Encore did the part that made it mastery. “Now YOU try at home. Glass of water, index card. When it works, you’ll know exactly why.” The audience laughed and clapped, and Encore took a bow — a performer who had given the trick away on purpose, because the giving-away was the whole point.

Marvel the mentor watched, smiling. “That’s the test,” Marvel said quietly. “Anyone can be surprised by a demonstration. But Encore understood the inverted cup deeply enough to PERFORM it, explain it, and then teach it to a room full of people so they could do it themselves. That’s the deepest kind of knowing there is — not ‘I get it,’ but ‘I can give it away and it still works in your hands.’ If you can teach the wonder, you’ve truly understood it.”

“Show it. Then teach it. Then let them try.”
