Cardi was a cardinal who loved to see things from above. From up in the tallest tree, the whole community of Maple Hollow spread out below like a drawing — and Cardi had learned to read that drawing. A map, she knew, is the world seen from above, with a way to point every direction.
"Up is north, down is south, right is east, left is west," Cardi would say. "Learn those, and you'll never be lost."
A young explorer wanted to get from the library to the pond but didn't know the way. Cardi swooped down with a map. "See the compass rose? North points up. The pond is straight EAST of the library — so which way do you walk?" The explorer pointed right. "East!"
The map turned a confusing walk into a clear direction.
Cardi showed the map's KEY. "These little pictures are symbols. A tree means the park, a book means the library. The key tells you what each one means." Suddenly the map wasn't a jumble of shapes — it was a whole community, readable at a glance.
Reading a key is like learning the map's secret language.
A lab-mate mixed up east and west and worried he was "bad at maps." Cardi's crest lifted kindly. "Everyone mixes those up! Here's a trick: WEST has the same start as 'left'... almost. Let's just check the compass rose together." No shame — just a shared look at the little rose.
Getting turned around isn't failing. It's why maps have a compass.
By the end, the explorer could trace a whole route across Maple Hollow, naming each direction.
"I can find anywhere now!" he said.
Cardi ruffled her bright feathers, warm with pride. Maps had once looked like a maze of lines to her students. But teaching them to read from above — to point north, follow a direction, decode a key — gave them a kind of freedom: the freedom to find their own way. And there was real joy in watching someone realize they'd never be lost again.
