Poppy has twin friends who move like nobody else: Bo and Bay, the bishops. They wear pointy little hats and glide instead of walk — swoosh! — along slanty diagonal paths.

Bo and Bay are twins, but they are never on the same colour. Bo lives on the dark squares and glides only on dark-square diagonals. Bay lives on the light squares and glides only on light-square diagonals. "I stay on my colour forever!" they both sing.

"How far do you glide?" asks Poppy. "As far as the slanty path goes!" says Bay, gliding swoosh across three light squares. "But only slanty," says Bo. "Never straight up or across — that's Rooky's job. We're the diagonal twins."

One time little Bo tried to hop onto a light square to play with Bay. Bonk! — Bo just bounced right back. Bo can't leave the dark squares, ever. Bo laughed. "That's okay! Bay glides the light, I glide the dark — together we cover everything!" In Pawnmeadow, being different is what makes the twins a great team.

Say it with Bo and Bay, out loud: "Bo glides dark, Bay glides light — always slanty, always diagonal!"

When the twins glide together — one on dark, one on light — their slanty paths cross the whole board. Bo and Bay feel happy gliding side by side, each on their own bright colour. "Two twins, two colours, one slanty family," they say. "That's us!"
