Chug

THE PUSH = BIG x FAST - *a cart's push (its momentum) is how big it is AND how fast it goes, put together; so a small quick cart can push as hard as a big slow one.*

Chug the Marmot Runs the Bump Lab

Chug is a round, chubby marmot with a warm buck-toothed smile and the calmest job in the meadow: he runs the Bump Lab. In the Bump Lab, carts roll along a track and bump into each other, and Chug watches, and counts, and helps everyone understand what happens.

Chug knows the one big secret of every bump. He calls it the push.

“A cart’s push,” he says warmly, patting a little cart, “is TWO things put together. How BIG the cart is - AND how FAST it’s going. Big-times-fast. That’s the push.”

So a big, heavy cart rolling slowly can have a strong push - because it is so BIG. And a teeny little cart zipping along fast can also have a strong push - because it is so FAST. Big can push hard. Fast can push hard. It is a close and friendly contest.

But here is Chug’s favorite part, the part that makes the Bump Lab so much fun. Before every bump, Chug tips his head, twinkles his eyes, and asks you the same gentle question:

“Which way do you think it will roll? Guess first - THEN we’ll watch and see!”

He does not want you to just watch. He wants you to guess - to make a little prediction in your head. Will the big cart win the bump? The fast one? Will they cancel out and stop? Chug loves a good guess, even a wrong one, because guessing first is how your brain gets ready to learn.

Then - bump! - the carts meet, and you watch what really happens. And whether your guess was right or a happy surprise, Chug beams. “You GUESSED,” he says proudly. “That’s the scientist’s way.”

That is Chug’s whole steady idea.

The push is how big times how fast - so guess it before the bump, then watch and see.

A grown-up can play too! Get two things that roll - a big ball and a small one, or two toy cars. Before you roll them at each other, GUESS together: “which one has the bigger push?” Think about how big each one is AND how fast you’ll roll it. Then roll them and watch the bump. Were you right? A big slow one and a small fast one can be a real close contest!

When a bump turns out just the way Chug hoped - a close, fair contest between big and fast - he does a happy little marmot wiggle and feels the cozy gladness of a good experiment. “Big times fast,” he says softly, tidying the track. “That’s the push. And you guessed it first, like a real Bump-Lab scientist.”
