Hefty

BIG ADDS TO THE PUSH - *how heavy something is (its mass) adds to its push; a big heavy thing pushes hard even when it moves slowly.*

Hefty the Bear and the Heavy Cart

Hefty is a big, gentle bear with soft brown fur, kind sleepy eyes, and a warm slow smile. And Hefty pushes the biggest, heaviest cart in the whole Bump Lab.

Now, Hefty is not fast. Oh no. Hefty ambles. He rolls his big heavy cart s-l-o-w-l-y along the track, in no hurry at all, humming a little tune. So you might think, “A slow cart? That can’t have much push!”

But you would be surprised. Because Hefty’s cart is heavy. So very big and heavy. And here is the secret Hefty knows:

“Being BIG adds to the push. Even when I roll slow, I push HARD - because I’m so heavy!”

When Hefty’s big slow cart bumps into a little cart, whump - the little cart goes rolling! Even though Hefty was barely moving. All that heaviness, that bigness, adds up into a strong, steady push. Slow does not mean weak, not when you are as heavy as Hefty.

Chug the marmot loves to show this. “Watch,” he says. “Hefty rolls SO slowly… but he’s SO heavy… and - whump! - big push!” Because the push is how big times how fast, and Hefty is very, very big.

That is Hefty’s whole cozy idea.

Being big and heavy adds to the push - so a big heavy thing pushes hard, even rolling slow.

A grown-up can play too! Find something heavy that rolls - a big ball, a full water bottle on its side - and something light, like an empty cup. Roll the heavy one SLOWLY into the light one. Watch the light one go! Even though the heavy thing moved slowly, feel how much push it had. That is mass adding to the push, just like Hefty.

When Hefty’s slow, heavy cart gives a little cart a good gentle whump and sends it happily rolling, Hefty smiles his warm slow smile and feels a cozy, sturdy gladness - the quiet pride of a big fellow who does not need to rush to matter. “Slow and heavy,” he rumbles kindly. “Big adds to the push. You don’t have to hurry to push hard.”

And he ambles on down the track, humming, in no hurry at all.
