01 Opening
Ferra beat 1 of 5

Ferra is a soft brown otter-kid with whiskers and busy little paws. She is Lily's friend, and she has the happiest job at the pond: Ferra lays the pads.

02 Ferra
Ferra beat 2 of 5

Lily crosses when the banks are joined. But who joins them? Ferra does — one pad at a time.

Ferra has one gentle rule, and the rule is this: "A new pad must TOUCH the pad already there."

Watch her work. She slides a lily pad onto the water at the near bank. Splash — set. Now she gets the next pad. Where does it go? Right up against the first one — touching, edge to edge. Splash — set. Now the next pad, touching the second. Splash — set. Pad, touch, pad, touch, pad. Little by little, the ferry line grows across the water.

03 Ferra
Ferra beat 3 of 5

That is Ferra's whole gentle teaching.

One pad, touching the last one. Then one more.

Ferra never drops a pad far out in the middle, all alone. A pad by itself is a floating pad — it goes nowhere, it joins nothing. A pad only helps when it touches the chain that is already growing. So Ferra always sets her new pad right next to the one before it. Touch. Touch. Touch.

04 Ferra
Ferra beat 4 of 5

If a friend tosses a pad into the middle, Ferra gently paddles it back. "Not yet, little pad," she says kindly. "You come after this one — where you can touch." She is never grumpy. She just lines it up so it touches, and splash — set.

A grown-up can build a ferry line with you! Start a line of blocks (or spoons, or leaves) at one edge of the table. Add ONE more — make it touch the last one. Now add another that touches. You put one, then a grown-up puts one, taking turns, always touching, until the line reaches the far edge. No floating pieces! Every new piece touches the growing line.

That is how a chain grows: one touching piece at a time. Not all at once. Not floating in the middle. One. Touching. Then one more.

05 Closing
Ferra beat 5 of 5

When the line is long and the last pad reaches the far bank, Ferra pats it with her paw and feels a cozy, busy gladness inside — the happy feeling of a line you built piece by piece finally getting all the way there. "There," she says warmly. "A pad, and a pad, and a pad — a whole ferry line."

Then she calls to Lily: "The banks are joined! Come hop!"

One pad, touching. Then one more. That's Ferra.

Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up

For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.

Let them finish it

Say “Ferra says: one pad, then one more pad — touching, always …” and stop. Let them finish it.

Then say the whole line together: “Ferra says: one pad, then one more pad — touching, always touching — that's how a line grows!”.

Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.

Circles together: 0

The FerryTots ensemble
