Rewind was a mountain guide's apprentice before she ever set foot in a classroom.

Her master was an old climber named Osta who smelled of pine pitch and dried tea. He carried a heavy coil of hemp rope over one shoulder and knew forty distinct passes through the high granite ridges. Rewind followed two paces behind his scuffed leather boots. Together, they led merchants, pilgrims, and nervous mapmakers across the jagged divide.

The outward route was always a sequence of clear decisions. You climbed through the damp pine forest first. You turned left at the split boulder. Next came the long crawl across the loose gray shale. Then you took a sharp right along the knife-edge ridge. Finally, you descended into the far valley where the grass grew thick.

Her master led the climb out, but bringing them home was Rewind's job.

She learned the secret during her first autumn on the high trail. The way back was never a different road. It was the exact same road, walked backward.

The order mattered just as much as the individual turns. You could not simply reverse the list from top to bottom. You had to unpick the trail from the end toward the beginning. The last thing you did on the way out was the first thing you undid on the way back.

Because the final leg had been a descent into the valley, the return trip began with an ascent. Because the turn before that had been a right along the ridge, the return required a left. Backwards through the list, with every single movement reversed.

"You unwrap a journey the way you unwrap a parcel," Rewind told the travellers while coiling her rope. "Last knot tied is always the first knot loosed."

Most travellers did not trust her at first. They looked at the winding mist and thought they were hopelessly lost.

One summer, a young clerk from the lowlands panicked halfway down a scree slope. He dropped his satchel in the shale and refused to take another step.

"We took seven different turns," the clerk protested, rubbing his blistered heels. "We will never find the camp."

Rewind stopped and handed him a wooden flask of cold spring water.

"Name the last thing we did," she said quietly.

"We climbed down twenty paces past the dwarf pines," he muttered.

"Then we climb up twenty paces past the dwarf pines," she answered. "That erases the step. After that, we undo the turn before it. We do not need to guess the whole mountain at once."

She tested the method whenever the trails were quiet. Rewind would tie a soft wool scarf over a friend's eyes at the trailhead stone. She led them through ten turns into the deep timber: three paces forward, a turn toward the sun, five paces across a creek, a leap over a fallen birch.

Then she brought them back by pure reversal. She guided their feet backward through the list, undoing each move in opposite order.

When she pulled the blindfold away, their boots rested on the exact stone where they had started. Not an inch to the left. Not an inch to the right. The forward path and the backward path were not two separate journeys. They were a single thread pulled tight from both ends.

At the time, Rewind had no idea this had a name in the world of numbers. She simply called it the way home.

Years passed, and Rewind's rope grew soft with grease and weather. She had guided hundreds of people across the passes and brought every single one back without a scratch.

Then a wax-sealed letter arrived at the base camp post.

The letter came from the FunctionForge Academy, a stone school perched above the southern valleys. The masters there were building systems out of pure logic. They were looking for an instructor who understood how a process could be run in reverse.

Rewind read the parchment twice by the firelight. She had spent a decade climbing up and down the same stone gullies. Her knees were ready for a dry floor and a slate board. She coiled her hemp rope, packed her iron pitons into her rucksack, and walked down the mountain.

At the academy, Rewind stood before a room of twelve-year-olds. They sat behind long wooden benches, scratching numbers onto slate with sticks of white chalk.

To the students, a formula looked like a trap. It swallowed a number, twisted it through unfamiliar symbols, and spat out something strange. They were terrified of getting stuck on the wrong side of the page.

Rewind smiled and rested her chalk against the black slate.

"A function is just a trail guide," she told them. "It gives your number a clear list of instructions."

She wrote a simple rule on the board: f(x) = 2x + 3.

"Let us take a traveller named five," Rewind said. "What happens to five on this trail?"

A boy named Toby in the second row raised his hand. "First you double it. That makes ten."

"Good," Rewind said. "Then what?"

"Then you add three," a girl named Maya chimed in. "That gives you thirteen."

Rewind wrote the result neatly: f(5) = 13.

"Now we are deep in the valley," Rewind said, tapping the thirteen with her chalk. "We hold thirteen in our hands. How do we bring our five back home?"

Toby leaned forward. "Cut it in half, then take away three?"

Rewind shook her head with a dry grin. "Think of putting on your mountain gear before a snowstorm. First you pull on your boots. Then you zip up your heavy coat."

Toby paused, looking down at his own shoes. "Right."

"When you come back inside by the warm fire, what comes off first?" Rewind asked.

"The coat," Maya said immediately. "You can't take your boots off through your coat sleeves."

"Exactly," Rewind said. "The last action taken is the first one you undo. That return journey is the inverse function."

She turned to the board and wrote the return trail step by step.

"The last step going out was add three. So our first step coming back must be subtract three."

She wrote: 13 − 3 = 10.

"The step before that was double. So the next undoing is halve."

She wrote: 10 ÷ 2 = 5.

She drew a solid circle around the number five.

"The traveller has returned to the trailhead," Rewind said. "Every step untangled in reverse order. We write the whole return path like this."

She marked the notation on the slate: f⁻¹(x) = (x − 3) ÷ 2.

Maya traced the symbols on her own slate with a dusty finger. "So the negative-one sign just means the way back?"

"It means the inverse," Rewind said. "It is the map that turns you around and brings you home."

The students spent the rest of the morning building their own paths.

They invented rules that multiplied, shifted, subtracted, and stacked operations like trail markers. Rewind walked between the wooden desks, checking their reverse maps.

When a student struggled, she did not give them an algebraic trick. She asked them where they were standing and what they had touched last.

"I squared my number and then added four," one boy grumbled, staring at a mess of eraser shavings. "Now I have twenty."

"What was the last stone you stepped on?" Rewind asked.

"The four," he said.

"Then push the four away first," she said. "Twenty minus four leaves sixteen. Now what was the stone before that?"

"Squaring."

"So take the square root," Rewind said. "And where do you land?"

"Four," the boy whispered. His eyes widened. "It worked."

"It always works," Rewind said. "As long as you do not skip knots."

When summer arrives and the academy halls empty for the season, Rewind returns to the high country.

She still guides a pass or two when the school can spare her. She leads travellers through the pines, past the split boulder, and across the shale. Whenever she reaches the valley floor, she looks back at the granite ridge cutting across the blue sky.

The world can feel vast and confusing to anyone caught in the middle of a long journey. But Rewind knows that no distance is permanent. Any set of steps taken can be untaken. A forward rule creates the adventure, but the inverse creates the safety.

"Every rule has a way home," she tells them, coiling an imaginary rope. "Reverse the steps, last one first, and you'll always land where you began."

When the hall empties, Rewind loops her old climbing rope over one shoulder and feels the steady, homeward gladness she first felt bringing travellers down out of the mountains: that no journey worth taking has to be a journey you can't come back from.
