Nay was a single-minded little firefly — literally single, because unlike Duet and Orla he had only one friend on one wire coming in. And whatever that one friend did, Nay did the exact opposite.
Friend glowing? Nay went dark. Friend dark? Nay lit up. Every single time, without fail, without fuss: the opposite. That was his entire life, and he was very good at it.
At first the other fireflies thought he was just contrary — the sort who disagrees to be annoying. "You only ever say the opposite," grumbled a cricket. "You're like a mirror that argues."
"I am like a mirror that argues," Nay agreed cheerfully, flipping dark as the cricket's little glow came near. "But watch — it's not rudeness. It's useful."
And it was. Because it turned out the circuit was full of moments where you desperately needed the opposite of something. There was a night-lamp that had to come on precisely when the daylight-sensor went OFF. If you wired the sensor straight to the lamp, the lamp glowed in daytime and slept at night — exactly backwards, useless. So they put Nay in the middle. Daylight sensor on → Nay dark → but Nay's darkness was wired as the lamp's "off," and when night fell and the sensor went dark, Nay lit up, and the night-lamp glowed exactly when it should.
"You turned a backwards thing forwards," said the cricket, watching the lamp behave for the first time.
"I turned it into its opposite," said Nay. "Which, when a thing is already backwards, is the same as turning it right." He flickered, pleased. "Everyone treats 'the opposite' like it's just disagreeing. But half the time, the answer you need is simply the other answer — and somebody has to be the one who reliably gives it."
The best builders learned to keep a Nay handy. Whenever a signal was doing precisely the wrong thing, they'd slot him in, and the wrong thing became the right thing, calm and certain. Not a mirror that argues, it turned out. A mirror that fixes.
When you wire a NOT gate, you are being Nay: the output is always the opposite of the one input — on flips to off, off flips to on.
The GateForge ensemble
Nay is one of the friends in GateForge. Each friend shows you one idea by how they act; meet them all and you have the whole subject.
-
Duet
The AND gate - a firefly who glows ONLY when BOTH her inputs are on; one light alone stays dark (the both-or-nothing rule that makes two-key locks safe)
-
Orla
The OR gate - a welcoming firefly who glows if EITHER input is on (or both); only all-quiet leaves her dark (any one signal is enough)
-
Odele
The XOR gate - a firefly who glows ONLY when her two inputs DIFFER (one on, one off); same-and-same, either way, leaves her dark (the mismatch-finder, and the carry in adding)
-
Nandi
The NAND gate - off ONLY when both inputs are on, bright every other time; the humble UNIVERSAL gate you can build every other one out of
-
Norah
The NOR gate - glows ONLY when both inputs are off; the smallest spark anywhere sends her dark (the all-clear light; the other universal gate)
