Bo is a keen young builder, forever halfway through a cottage and forever short of one thing: wood. He has stone to spare, grain going stale, a whole basket of odds and ends — but the wood always runs out just when the walls are ready to go up. So Bo stands at Zara's Trading Post most mornings with the same look on his face: a builder itching to build, one plank short.
That look is exactly why a trade with Bo is such a good one. Because Bo has a real need, and a real need is where the strongest deals live.
Zara pointed this out to Vero one day, nodding toward Bo. "See him? He's got stone he doesn't want and no wood he does. If you've got spare wood, and you give it to Bo for his spare stone — look what happens. Bo finally builds his wall. You get the stone you were after. You didn't take anything from him. You filled the gap he had." She smiled. "That's the best kind of deal there is. Trade into the need."
Vero frowned. "But how do I know what Bo needs?"
"You ask," said Zara, as if it were the simplest thing in the world — which it is. "You look at what he keeps running short of. Bo doesn't hide it; he's practically got 'I NEED WOOD' painted on his apron. Most traders will tell you what they're missing if you just ask kindly. And once you know the good someone's truly short of, and you happen to have a spare of it — that's a deal that leaves you both better."
Bo, overhearing, laughed his big builder's laugh. "It's true. Somebody hands me the wood I've been missing all week and I could hug them. Meanwhile they've cleared out a stone they didn't want anyway. Everybody wins." He hoisted a fresh plank onto his half-built wall, and you could see the pure gladness of it — the joy of a builder who finally has the one thing that lets him build.
That is the difference between a grab and a good trade. A grab takes whatever you can get. A good trade fills a need on both sides — you clear your spare, they get their missing piece, and two half-stuck traders become two who can keep going. Nothing was created out of nothing; the goods were always there. They just moved to where they were needed.
So the next time you have a spare of something, look around for the person who's short of exactly that. Ask them, kindly, what they're missing. When their real need meets your real spare, you've found the best deal on the whole island — the kind where both of you come away ahead.
Give someone the very good they've been missing, and you're both better off. That's Bo.
