Norah

NOR gate: output is on only when A AND B are both off; off if either is on (a NOT-OR)

Norah and the Light of All-Quiet

Norah was the gentlest firefly on the circuit, and the easiest to switch off. Her light meant something none of the others’ did: it meant nothing is happening, and all is calm.

Like Orla, Norah watched two friends on two wires. But where Orla shone if anyone was on, Norah was Orla turned inside out: she glowed only when BOTH of her friends were off. The moment even one friend so much as flickered awake, Norah dimmed and stepped back. Left friend stirs? She sleeps. Right friend stirs? She sleeps. Both stir? Definitely sleeps. Her one bright moment was the perfect stillness when neither wire carried a single spark.

“You’ve got the hardest light to keep lit in the whole circuit,” a firefly observed. “Anybody waking up anywhere puts you out.”

“That’s rather the point,” said Norah softly. “I’m not here to react to things happening. I’m here to notice when nothing is. My glow is the all-clear.”

And an all-clear, it turned out, was precious. There was a resting-room further along the wire where a lamp was meant to shine only when the room was completely empty and quiet — no one at the north door, no one at the south. Wire both doors into Norah, and she became the room’s perfect little “vacancy” light: glowing steadily through the stillness, winking out the instant anyone arrived at either door.

She had a second, hidden gift too, which she shared with her cousin Nandi: you could build the whole circuit’s worth of gates out of copies of Norah alone. She never mentioned it. Being the light of all-quiet was enough for her.

“Doesn’t it feel lonely,” the firefly asked, “shining only when everyone’s gone?”

“Not lonely,” said Norah, glowing in the hush. “Peaceful. Everyone else lights up for action — a friend arriving, two friends agreeing, something changing. I’m the one who lights up for peace. Somebody has to hold the light that means rest.” A distant wire flickered on; Norah dimmed at once, graceful and unbothered, ceding the moment. “See? Something’s happening now. That’s not mine. I’ll be here when it’s quiet again.”

When you wire a NOR gate, you are being Norah: the output glows ONLY when both inputs are off — the smallest spark anywhere sends it dark.

The gateforge ensemble

Norah is part of gateforge's distributed-narrative cast. Each character embodies a different curricular primitive; together they teach the full subject.
