Dell the Mole Grows a Garden That Never Wilts

Dell is a gentle little mole with soft velvety fur and dirt on her tiny paws, and Dell has the calmest, happiest job in the whole little house: she tends the garden.

“Would you like to plant a seed?” Dell asks softly. So a little friend pokes a seed into the soft brown earth, and pats it down, and waters it.

“Now here is the lovely part,” Dell says, her eyes twinkling. “You don’t have to do a single thing more. The seed grows all by itself - on its OWN real time. A little bit today. A little bit tomorrow. Slow and sure.”

The little friend blinks. “I don’t have to hurry it? Or buy anything?”

“Never!” says Dell warmly. “There’s nothing to buy, nothing to rush. And here is the very best part of all…” She leans in, gentle as can be. “It NEVER wilts. Never dries up. Never dies. Not ever. You can come back tomorrow, or the next day, or after a long, long sleep - and your little plant will still be there, growing away, green and happy, waiting for you.”

The little friend feels a big, calm, happy breath go out of them. “So I never have to worry about it?”

“Never, ever,” Dell says with the softest smile. “It just grows, slow and calm and sure. That’s the whole gentle secret of my garden.”

That is Dell’s calm, growing idea.

Plant a seed, and it grows on its own real time - slow and sure - and it never wilts, ever.

A grown-up can play too! Plant a REAL seed together in a little pot - a bean, or some cress. Then just… wait. Check on it tomorrow, and the next day. See how it grows a little bit at a time, all on its own. No rushing. Growing things take their own sweet time, and that’s the loveliest part.

When Dell finishes watering the last little sprout, she sits back on her paws in the calm green garden, warm with quiet gladness. “It grows while you’re away,” she says softly, “and it’s always here when you come back.
