01 Opening

A boy came to IllusionForge holding a coin and a wounded pride. "A street magician got me," he said. "He made a coin vanish and turn up behind my ear, and I watched his hands the whole time. I don't get it. I was paying total attention. How did he fool someone who was watching so hard?"

Skim the swallow and Notion the moth looked at each other — the one who shows attention cuts, the one who shows expectation adds — and both smiled, because between the two of them lay the secret behind every trick the boy had ever fallen for.

"You were watching hard," said Skim. "That's exactly why."

"And you saw a coin travel," said Notion, "that never traveled at all. Two different edits, working together." She fluttered. "Let us show you how a magician steals your eyes — because it's the same two moves, every time, and once you see them, you'll see them everywhere."

Skim went first, because the first move is the cut.

"A magician's whole art starts with me," Skim said. "With where your attention goes. You think you watched his hands the whole time. You watched the hand he wanted you to watch — the one waving the coin, the one telling a story, the one your spotlight locked onto." She flicked her sharp wings. "And while your bright narrow spotlight blazed on that hand, his other hand did the real move — quietly, out in the dark beside your focus, where your attention wasn't. You didn't fail to look. You looked exactly where he pointed you. And everything you weren't pointed at — including the actual trick — went completely dark." She looked at the boy. "That's the cut. Your mind can only spotlight one thing, so the magician chooses your one thing for you, and hides the truth in everything he's steered you away from. The harder you watched the flashy hand, the blinder you went to the sneaky one." She glanced at Notion. "But a good trick isn't only about what you miss. It's also about what you add — the thing you were sure you saw that never happened. And that's her half."

Notion took over, soft-winged, because the second move is the invention.

"Skim showed you what got cut," Notion said. "I'll show you what got painted in. When the magician closed his hand and showed you it was 'holding' the coin — did you see the coin go in? Or did your brain, expecting a coin to be there, fill one in — paint a coin into a hand that was already empty?" The boy's face changed. "You didn't watch a coin travel. You watched a hand close, heard a story about a coin, expected a coin — and your pattern-hungry brain built the whole journey for you: coin goes in, coin travels, coin arrives. It felt like seeing. It was expecting, dressed up as seeing." She fluttered her eyespot wings. "That's the invention. Your brain is always ahead of your eyes, guessing what should come next, painting in the expected pattern. Usually that's a gift — it's why you can read messy handwriting or catch a ball. But a magician feeds your expectations on purpose, so your own brain paints the trick for him. He barely has to do anything. You fill in the rest."

And then, together, they showed the boy the whole machine behind the magic.

"So here's every trick you've ever fallen for," said Skim, "in two moves." She and Notion stood on either side of the coin. "One — the cut. He points your attention somewhere flashy, and does the real move in the dark you're not watching. That's mine. Two — the invention. He feeds your expectations, and your brain paints in the part that never happened. That's hers." They looked at each other. "And separately —"

"— my cut alone would just make you miss things," said Skim.

"— and my invention alone would just make you imagine things," said Notion. "But together — cut and invent, at the very same moment — that's unbeatable. He hides the truth where your spotlight isn't, and he hands your pattern-hunter the story you expect, so your own mind fills the gap he made with the fiction he wants. You don't just miss the real move. You actively build the fake one." She fluttered. "That's why watching harder didn't save you. Watching harder just made Skim's cut deeper — a brighter spotlight, a darker dark — and gave my invention a more focused, more expectant mind to paint on. The magician doesn't fight your attention or your imagination. He rides both."

The boy turned the coin over, seeing it now — not as a trick done to him, but as a trick done with his own two mental habits. "So he didn't really fool my eyes," he said slowly. "He aimed my attention and fed my expectations, and I fooled myself."

"Now you've got it," said Skim and Notion together.

"But that's kind of unsettling," the boy said. "If my mind's always cutting and inventing... does that only happen with magicians? Or is it happening, like — all the time?"

Skim and Notion traded a look, gentler now.

"All the time," said Skim honestly. "Not just tricks. Every day, your mind cuts what you don't attend to and fills in what you expect. It's how you function — you can't see everything, and you have to predict what's coming, or you'd be frozen and lost." She flicked her wings. "The cut and the invention aren't malfunctions. They're your mind being efficient in a world too big and too fast to take in whole."

"But knowing they're there," said Notion, "changes everything. A magician uses them against you. So can a person, a story, an advertisement, a rumor — anything that points your attention one way and feeds you the pattern it wants you to fill in." She fluttered her false eyes. "You can't turn the editor off. But you can learn to ask its questions. When something feels too clean, too obvious, too much like exactly what you expected — pause. What was I steered away from? What did I fill in that I never actually saw?" She smiled. "That's the whole craft. Not to distrust your mind — it's brilliant. Just to know it's an editor, not a camera, and to check its cuts and its inventions when it matters."

The boy looked at his coin, and for the first time he wasn't embarrassed about being fooled — he was fascinated by exactly how.

And Skim and Notion felt it settle bright and shared between them — that clicked-together, the mind cuts and invents, and knowing both is power gladness that comes when a private humiliation turns into an understanding you can use forever. Skim loved the cut. Notion loved the invention. But what they loved most was this: showing a fooled kid that a magician never really beat him — that his own attention and his own expectation, the two greatest gifts his mind has, had been gently borrowed and turned into a trick, and that seeing exactly how was the one thing that would keep it from working on him quite so easily ever again.
