Nana
the family voice sings first to show the way, then softens so you can lead the song
Nana Leads, Then Lets You Lead
Nana was the family’s oldest, gentlest firefly — the one who knew all the songs by heart. When a lullaby began, Nana always sang first, soft and sure, so the little one could hear the way it went.
But Nana had a special magic: once the song was going, she would step back — her voice growing quiet and warm, like a hand letting go of a bicycle so you can pedal on your own. Not gone. Just softer. Making room for your voice to lead.
The little one loved this. Nana would sing the first line — “the way it goes” — and then hush, and the little one would carry the tune, wobbly and proud, with Nana glowing close behind. The grown-up sings first; then it’s your turn to shine.
Some nights the little one led the whole song, and Nana just hummed along, soft as a heartbeat. “You’ve got it,” her quiet glow said. Family voices show you the way — and then they cheer you on while you find your own.
Reading together with a grown-up? A card for the grown-up
For the grown-up: ask one question, then wait. When they answer, add one word to what they said. Tap the button when they have said something — that is one turn each, a circle. Nothing is recorded or kept.
Let them finish it
Say “Nana sings first, then steps back — so …” and stop. Let them finish it.
Now wait. Count slowly to five in your head. Their answer is worth the quiet.
