01 Opening

Atlas held up a small globe — round, and bumpy with tiny raised mountains — and set a flat blank sheet beside it. "Make this," he said, tapping the globe, "into this," tapping the paper. "What has to give?"

"Two different things, and we each handle one," said Splay, holding up an orange peel. "I handle the roundness."

"And I handle the height," said Relief, tracing a set of nested rings.

They looked at the little round, bumpy globe, and at the flat empty page, and agreed: it could not become the page without losing both of those things, somehow, somewhere.

"The world is round, and paper is flat, and you cannot press one onto the other without stretching it," said Splay. "That's projection, my part. I flatten the roundness — and it always costs something. Keep the shapes true and the sizes swell; keep the sizes true and the shapes squash. There's no way to keep all of it." She laid the cracking peel on the page. "So I don't pretend there's no cost. I name it. I tell you which projection I used and which truth I kept, so the stretch you're looking at is one you know about."

"And the world isn't just round — it's bumpy, mountains and valleys," said Relief. "That height is a whole third dimension, and a flat page can't stick up. That's contour, my part. I flatten the height — but I don't throw it away. I remember it in rings: each line a single height, lines crowded close for steep, spread wide for gentle." She traced the nested loops. "So the mountain is still here, exactly, stored in the spacing. I gave up the sticking-up, but I kept the measurement. And like Splay, I tell you my rule — the contour interval — so you can read the height right back out."

A student put it together slowly. "So a flat map of the real world has two things flattened — its roundness AND its height — and both of you had to trade something to do it?"

"Yes," they said together. "The round world can't lie flat without a stretch," said Splay. "The bumpy world can't lie flat without losing its height," said Relief. "So every flat map you hold has quietly given up two whole dimensions worth of truth — and the only question is whether it did so honestly." They set peel and rings side by side on the page. "A dishonest map hides both trades and lets you think you're seeing the world as it is. An honest one announces both — names its projection, names its contour interval — so you can see exactly what it kept and what it let go."

05 Closing

"That's the two of us in one lesson," they finished. "I flatten the roundness and name the stretch," said Splay. "I flatten the height and keep it in rings," said Relief. "And neither of us hides the trade," they said together, "because the honest thing a flat map can do — the only honest thing — is admit, out loud, what it gave up to become flat." Atlas nodded, and the student looked at the ordinary map on the wall and saw, for the first time, two invisible sacrifices holding it up: a round world stretched, a tall world laid down, both traded away on purpose, both — on a good map — confessed.

The little globe kept its roundness and its bumps; the flat page kept neither, and said so — and that saying-so was the whole difference between a map that informs and a map that fools.
