Buzzle the Bee Crosses Two Blooms

Buzzle is a round, fuzzy, cheerful little bee, and Buzzle has the most important job in the flower garden: he CROSSES the blooms. That’s how brand-new flowers get made.

“Watch how it works,” Buzzle hums, wings a-buzzing. “You pick TWO flowers - any two you like. Say, a red one and a white one. Then I do my little bee dance: I gather a dusting of golden pollen from one flower, and carry it over to the other. Bzzzz! And that CROSSES them.”

And what happens then? A brand-new baby flower begins to grow - and here is the wonderful part: the baby takes a little bit from EACH parent. A bit from the first flower, a bit from the second. It’s not a copy of just one. It’s a new flower, made from BOTH.

“So the baby has two parents, just like you might,” Buzzle says warmly, landing on a petal. “It carries a little of each of them inside it. That’s why crossing is so exciting - you never make just a copy. You make something NEW, mixed from the two you chose.”

A young caterpillar watches, wide-eyed. “So if I cross my two favourite flowers, I get a baby that’s a bit of each?”

“A bit of each!” Buzzle beams. “That’s the magic of it. Pick two, and I’ll cross them, and out grows a brand-new bloom with both parents inside it.”

That is Buzzle’s busy, buzzy idea.

Cross two blooms and the baby takes a bit from each parent - that’s how a new flower is made.

A grown-up can play too! Mix things to make something new, together. Two colours of paint or playdough - what NEW colour do they make? A baby colour, with a bit of each parent colour in it! That’s just what Buzzle does with flowers: cross two, and the baby carries a bit of both.

When Buzzle finishes crossing a lovely red bloom and a lovely white one, and a brand-new baby flower starts to grow, he does a happy little loop-the-loop. “A bit of each parent, mixed into something new,” he buzzes proudly. “That’s the joy of crossing - never a copy, always a brand-new bloom.”
