Hidey the Ladybird and the Hidden Colour

Hidey is a cheerful little ladybird with a shiny red shell dotted with black spots, and Hidey knows the most surprising secret in the whole flower garden. It’s about how a flower can carry a HIDDEN colour inside it - one you can’t see at all.

“Here’s a real puzzle for you,” Hidey says, spots twinkling. “Buzzle crosses two RED flowers - both parents red, bright red, no white anywhere. So the baby MUST be red too, right?” She pauses, eyes sparkling. “But sometimes… out grows a WHITE baby! A white flower, from two red parents! How can that be?”

It’s not a trick, and it’s not a made-up rule. It’s the honest, real way flowers work. And here is the secret: a red flower can carry a hidden white inside it.

“You see,” Hidey explains gently, “a flower can hold TWO colours inside - one you SEE, and one that’s hidden. This red flower LOOKS all red. But tucked away inside, it might secretly carry a white, quietly hidden, not showing. Red is a bold colour, so when it’s there, it shows on the outside and covers up the hidden white.”

“So if BOTH red parents each carry a hidden white inside,” Hidey goes on, “then sometimes a baby gets the hidden white from BOTH of them - and with no red to cover it, that white finally shows! A white baby, from two red parents. Surprise!”

A young snail gasps. “So the white was hiding inside the reds the whole time?”

“The whole time!” Hidey beams. “You just couldn’t see it until a baby showed it. That’s why crossing flowers is full of honest surprises - because what you SEE on a flower isn’t always the whole story. There can be a hidden colour tucked inside.”
