Petal

MORE WAYS, TALLER PILE — *count how many ways each number can be made; the piles form a gentle hill, tallest in the middle at seven, low at the far ends.*

Petal Tends the Whole Meadow

Petal is a gentle, flower-loving ladybird, the keeper of Lucky’s Meadow, and while Lucky watches seven and Twobble waits for two, Petal watches all the patches at once — because Petal has noticed the loveliest thing of all. No matter how many times the dice roll, the meadow always ends up the same shape: a gentle hill of flowers, tall in the middle, low at both far ends.

“It happens every time,” she told her friends, sweeping a little leg across the meadow. “And I finally worked out why. It’s the ways! Every number grows a pile as tall as the number of ways it can be made.”

She walked them along the patches. “The two patch? One way to make it, so one little sprout. The three patch? Two ways — 1-and-2, or 2-and-1 — so a bit taller. Four? Three ways. Five? Four ways. Six? Five ways. And seven, right in the middle — six ways! The tallest pile of all!” Then she walked the other way, down the far slope. “And then it comes back down. Eight has five ways. Nine has four. Ten, three. Eleven, two. Twelve, only one — 6 and 6 — so it’s tiny, just like two.”

Lucky’s eyes went wide. “So the whole meadow makes a hill!

“A gentle hill, every single time,” said Petal, glowing with the joy of the pattern. “Low at two, climbing up and up to the big tall pile at seven, then sloping gently back down to twelve. The more ways a number has, the taller I grow its pile — and since the middle numbers have the most ways, the middle is always highest.”

The friends looked out at the meadow, and there it was: the soft, sure hill, seven towering in the centre, two and twelve barely peeking up at the edges. It didn’t matter if they played once or a hundred times. The ways were the ways. The hill was always the hill.

“That’s my favourite thing about the whole game,” Petal sighed happily. “You can’t see it in one roll. But play and play, and the meadow always makes the same beautiful shape — because it’s built out of how many ways.”

The more ways a number can be made, the taller its pile grows — so the meadow always makes a gentle hill, tallest in the middle at seven. That’s Petal.
