At the edge of Lane Four sits Split, a round, friendly stopwatch with a bright dial for a face and two little hands that tick with a calm, steady beat. Swimmers love Split because he answers the question that matters most after a race: how much faster was that? The answer lives in the split — the time between two clock readings.

A young swimmer once finished a lap and read the wall clock: 1:15 at the start of her set, 1:52 at the end. "So… how long was that?" she asked. Split ticked thoughtfully. "We subtract one clock from the other," he said, "but time is sneaky — it counts in sixties, not tens. Watch." He lined the two times up like a proper subtraction, seconds under seconds, minutes under minutes.

Fifty-two seconds take away fifteen seconds is thirty-seven. One minute take away one minute is zero. "Thirty-seven seconds," Split announced, hands settling. But then he showed her the tricky case, the one that trips everyone. "What if you'd finished at 2:08? You can't take 15 from 8." He didn't rush. "So we borrow — one whole minute becomes sixty seconds. Now it's 68 seconds minus 15, and one fewer minute up top." He never made her feel slow for forgetting; he just showed the borrow, calm as his own ticking.

Say it with Split, out loud: "Line up the clocks, then take one away — the gap in between is your split today."

She tried it herself on her next swim, lining up the clocks and borrowing a minute as sixty seconds. The number came out clean and true. "That's my real split," she said, and it felt better than any guess. Split's dial gleamed. "An honest number is the one you can actually chase."

That is Split's move. A split is the gap between two clock readings — line them up, subtract seconds from seconds and minutes from minutes, and when the top is too small, borrow one whole minute as sixty seconds. Do it carefully, and the exact time you gained is yours to keep.
