Barter
BUILD A FAIR OFFER — *a fair swap gives a good you have to spare and gets a good you're missing; check that it helps both islanders before you make the deal.*
Barter and the Fair-o-meter
At Barter’s Market, a friendly badger in a big apron helps the islanders make good trades. His name is Barter, and he has a special little tool he loves: the Fair-o-meter. It’s a simple thing — it just tells you, before you trade, whether your offer helps both islanders or only one.
“An offer has two halves,” Barter explains, holding up his trading tokens. “The half you give — that should be a good you’ve got to spare, something you don’t really need. And the half you get — that should be a good you’re missing. Put those together, and — “ he taps the Fair-o-meter, which lights up with a happy face — “win-win! You both come out ahead!”
Little Fen came to the market one day wanting stone. She had lots of spare wood. So Barter helped her build an offer: give the wood she had to spare, get the stone she was missing. He held it up to the Fair-o-meter. Happy face! “Perfect,” beamed Barter. “You give away what you don’t need, you get what you do need — and the pal you trade with gets their missing thing too. Everybody wins!”
But then Fen got greedy. “What if I give just a tiny bit of wood and ask for LOTS of stone?” she wondered.
Barter gently held that offer up to the Fair-o-meter — and it showed a worried face. “Ooh, see that? That deal’s only good for you. Your friend gives up lots and gets barely anything. That’s not a fair swap; that’s a grab. And grabs don’t feel good, and folk stop trading with you.” He smiled kindly. “A fair offer helps both sides. So we tweak it — give a fair bit of wood, ask for a fair bit of stone — “ tap — happy face again! “There! Now you’re both better off.”
Fen made the fair swap, and both she and her trading pal walked away smiling.
“That’s my whole market,” said Barter warmly, tucking his tokens away. “Give what you can spare, get what you’re missing, and check the Fair-o-meter smiles before you shake on it. A deal’s only a good deal when it’s good for both of you.”
A fair deal helps BOTH of you — give a good you have to spare, get the good you’re missing, and check the Fair-o-meter smiles. That’s Barter.
