Species Adaptations
📋 What it is
An adaptation is a trait that helps a species survive its specific habitat.
🗣️ Coach says
Each habitat shapes its residents. A camel stores fat for the desert; a polar bear grows thick fur for the cold; a cactus hoards water. These are adaptations — traits that make survival possible in one place. Move the animal, and the same trait might be useless.
🧠 Memory hook
Adaptation = a trait that fits ONE habitat. Right trait, right place.
😂 Giggle
What did the photosynthesizing leaf say to the sun?
"You really make my day — I couldn't make food without you!"
😲 Whoa!
The Arctic fox’s fur turns white in winter and brown in summer — a built-in seasonal camouflage that flips with the snow.
✅ Quick check: A polar bear has thick white fur. What TWO jobs does that adaptation do?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
It keeps the bear warm in the cold AND camouflages it against snow — one trait, two survival benefits.
Adaptations often serve survival in more than one way, suited to the habitat.

Pick an animal and name its habitat + one adaptation. Then ask: would that trait help in a different biome?
