Nutrient Cycles
📋 What it is
Nutrients (carbon, nitrogen, water) cycle endlessly between living things and the environment.
🗣️ Coach says
Unlike energy, matter is RECYCLED. Carbon, nitrogen, and water move in loops — a plant takes in carbon, an animal eats the plant, a decomposer returns it to the soil and air, and round it goes. Nothing is wasted; the same atoms get used again and again.
🧠 Memory hook
Energy flows ONE way; matter CYCLES in loops. Same atoms, reused forever.
😂 Giggle
Why did the tundra refuse to chill out?
It said it was already cold enough, thanks!
😲 Whoa!
A carbon atom in your body may once have been part of a dinosaur, a tree, and the air — matter has been cycling for billions of years.
✅ Quick check: How is a nutrient cycle different from energy flow in an ecosystem?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Nutrients (matter) are recycled in loops; energy flows one way and is lost as heat — matter cycles, energy doesn’t.
Ecosystems recycle matter but require a constant new input of energy.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Trace a carbon atom: air → plant → animal → decomposer → back to air. It never gets “used up”.
