Ecology Misconceptions

📋 What it is

Common myths: “all bugs are pests”, “nature is perfectly balanced”, “one species doesn’t matter”.

🗣️ Coach says

Ecology has sticky myths. Most insects are helpful (pollinators, decomposers), not pests. Nature isn’t a fixed “balance” — it’s always shifting. And a single “unimportant” species can be a keystone whose loss collapses the web. A good ecologist checks assumptions against evidence.

🧠 Memory hook

Bugs aren’t all pests. Nature shifts, never “fixed”. One species CAN matter enormously.

😂 Giggle

Why did the niche get so picky?
Because it was very specific about who lived there!

😲 Whoa!

Bees and other pollinators are behind roughly one in every three bites of food you eat — losing them would be a disaster, not a minor change.

✅ Quick check: True or false: “Losing one small species never really matters to an ecosystem.”

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Find a “fact” about nature you’ve heard (all snakes are dangerous?) and ask what evidence backs it.

🤸 Brain break: Myth-buster: cross arms in an “X” for the myth, then thumbs-up for the evidence.
