Properties of Matter
📋 What it is
Matter is anything with mass and volume; we describe it by properties like colour, hardness, and density.
🗣️ Coach says
Everything you can touch is matter — it takes up space and has mass. We tell substances apart by their properties: colour, texture, how hard, how dense, does it dissolve. Properties are a substance’s fingerprint.
🧠 Memory hook
Matter = has mass + takes up space. Properties = its fingerprint.
😂 Giggle
Why do chemists love nitrates?
Because they're cheaper than day rates!
😲 Whoa!
A cubic metre of air weighs about 1.2 kg — invisible matter is still matter, and there’s more of it pressing on you than you’d ever guess.
✅ Quick check: Is air matter, even though you can’t see it?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Yes — air has mass and takes up space (it fills a balloon), so it’s matter.
Anything with mass and volume is matter, visible or not.
🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)
Pick three objects and name one property each that tells them apart (hardness, colour, floats-or-sinks).
