Mission 4 of 16

Atoms & Elements

📋 What it is

Atoms are the tiny building blocks of matter; an element is made of just one kind of atom.

🗣️ Coach says

Zoom in far enough on anything and you reach atoms — the smallest pieces that still count as that stuff. An element (like gold or oxygen) is made of only ONE kind of atom. Everything around you is different elements combined in different ways.

🧠 Memory hook

Atom = smallest building block. Element = one single kind of atom.

😂 Giggle

What do you do with a sick chemist?
If you can't helium and you can't curium, you might as well barium!

😲 Whoa!

There are about 90 naturally occurring elements, and everything you’ve ever seen — stars, oceans, you — is built from just those few dozen kinds of atoms.

✅ Quick check: What makes gold an ELEMENT?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Name three elements you’ve heard of (oxygen, iron, gold). Each is one pure kind of atom.

⭐ Do the round to earn your star →
🤸 Brain break: Build-it: pinch fingers into a tiny “atom”, then stack several — “now it’s a chunk of an element.”
