📋 What it is

The heaviest elements form in dying stars — supernovae and merging stars seed space with new material.

A star’s death is a factory. Fusion in a star’s core builds elements up to iron; the explosive death of massive stars (and collisions of dead-star cores) forges the heaviest elements — gold, uranium — and scatters them into space to build the next generation of stars and planets.
