A trick is one card played by each player; the highest card of the suit led wins it — you must follow suit if you can.

The engine of bridge and most card games: everyone plays one card (a "trick"), and the highest card in the suit that was LED wins. The golden rule — if you have the suit led, you MUST play it. Winning tricks is how you win.

Trick-taking games are played all over the world — Bridge, Hearts, Spades, Euchre — all built on this one "follow suit, highest wins" idea.
✅ Quick check: A heart is led. You have hearts in your hand. Must you play one?
Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.
Yes — you must follow suit if you can; you may only play another suit when you have no hearts left.
Following the led suit is compulsory whenever you hold that suit.
🪄 Trick question: If you have no cards of the suit led, may you play any card?
Careful — think it through, then reveal.
Yes — when you can't follow suit you may play anything (including a trump, if trumps are in play).
The follow-suit rule only binds when you actually hold the led suit.
