Round 12 of 16

Defense: Leads & Signals

📋 What it is

Defenders can't talk, so they use their choice of card (leads and signals) to send legal messages to partner.

🗣️ Coach says

When you're NOT the declarer, you and your partner defend — and you still can't speak. So the CARDS talk: your opening lead and the small cards you play send agreed signals ("I like this suit", "play the other one"). Good defense is a silent conversation.

🧠 Memory hook

Defenders can't speak — so the cards do. Your leads and spot-cards are the message.

😂 Giggle

Why did the long suit feel powerful late in the hand?
Because once everyone else runs out, your extra cards win tricks!

😲 Whoa!

Expert defenders can reconstruct the declarer's entire hidden hand just from the order the cards appear — a kind of detective work played in silence.

✅ Quick check: How do bridge defenders communicate if they can't talk?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Agree one simple signal with a partner (high card = "I like this suit") and defend a hand using only that.

🤸 Brain break: Silent-signal: send a thumbs-up with a card instead of words — defense is a quiet language.
