Introduction to Debate

📋 What it is

A debate is a structured argument where two sides give reasons for opposite positions and a judge decides who argued better.

🗣️ Coach says

Debate isn’t a shouting match — it’s a fair game with rules. Each side gets equal time, must give REASONS (not just opinions), and the best-argued case wins. You can even argue a side you don’t personally agree with.

🧠 Memory hook

Debate = reasons, not volume. Best argued, not loudest, wins.

😂 Giggle

Why did the debater bring a mirror to the podium?
To reflect on their arguments!

😲 Whoa!

Competitive debaters are often told their SIDE only minutes before the round — so they must argue whatever they’re given.

✅ Quick check: What makes a debate different from just arguing with someone?

Say your answer out loud first — then reveal.

🧪 Try it! (2 minutes)

Pick a fun topic (best pizza topping) and give ONE reason for each side.

🤸 Brain break: Two corners: point left for "for", right for "against", and switch sides on a clap.
